A 17-year-old honour student from western Pennsylvania who disabled Sony's online PlayStation site must serve one year on probation, perform 250 hours of community service and repay Sony $5,000.

The sentence came from Judge John Driscoll, as the teen was found guilty of unlawful use of a computer, criminal use of a computer, computer trespassing and the distribution of a computer virus. These actions had allowed the teen to cripple Sony's website for eleven days in November 2008.

The 11th-grader at Greater Latrobe High School was said to be a normal teenager, a good student, and participated in school activities, according to a juvenile probation department report. However, the report noted that the teenager, name withheld, may have developed an obsession over winning while spending lengthy periods of time playing videogames at night.

An FBI investigation determined that the youth had taken down Sony's Playstation website in retaliation for being banned after he had been accused of cheating in an online SOCOM game.

The judge, while emphasising the seriousness of the crime, accepted that the teen "seems to have accepted personal responsibility and agrees he should be held accountable." While Sony had demanded more than $30,000 in restitution, the judge ruled the amount was excessive.
