In a gutsy move for a company that has previously had a rather non-commital approach to online services, Nintendo has suddenly woken up to the fact that the Wii Shop and WiiWare are selling like hot cakes, and online multiplayer games are enjoyed by Wii and DS players alike.

Where the Big N sees people enjoying themselves, they also see the potential for profit. Speaking to Edge Magazine, Nintendo big gun Shigeru Myamoto has described Nintendo's wish to "nail down online services".

"Do we need to demand customers pay monthly fees to enjoy online activities? Or give an online subscription that is free of charge, but then offer something extra for people that pay, so that they get some extra value? With these core business strategies I think we are less active than we should be." he said.

Myamoto also pooh-poohed suggestions that Nintendo has been less than proactive in the online marketplace, pointing out that Wii consoles were always designed to be online all the time.

It seems a little late in the day to be asking people for money for Wii online services, just as the console's reaching saturation point and sales are dropping off. But Nintendo's smiley God-Prince could probably get away with it, if anyone could.
