Most of you, unless you're a huge Street Fighter nerd, are probably thinking, David who? So, in short David Sirlin is a game designer and ex-tournament level Street Fighter 2 player. As part of his job at Backbone Studios, his most noteworthy contributions have been regarding the balancing of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix.

The interview covers Sirlin's views on the balancing of multiplayer games and 'subtractive' game design, whereby the simplifying of a game can eradicate balancing flaws and allow for more reactive play, removing excessive moves/units and in turn the bewildering breadth of tactics that can be a barrier to newcomers. Also touched on is Sirlin's book, 'Playing to Win'. It's his guide to approach and play to high level pretty much any zero-sum competitive game. He talks about his definition of a 'scrub', the complete opposite of a Play to Winner amongst other concepts in the book. Sirlin's creativity doesn't stop there, also talked about are the card games he has created and how his design philosophies have been carried over to them.
