Medal of Honor "turns war into participatory cinema" says ex-US Marine

Games and politics make odd bedfellows. After increasing pressure, EA took the bold step of removing the Taliban as a playable multiplayer enemy force in the upcoming Medal of Honor game.

Despite this, several people still aren't happy with the game's realistic depiction of the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan including an ex-US Marine who has described the game as "turning war into participatory cinema"

On the subject of EA's decision to remove the Taliban (albiet by name only) from the game, the same marine said "Changing the name of the enemy does not change who they are or what they do".

Infantry Officer Benjamin Busch also went on to say "But what nation or military has the right to govern fiction? Banning the representation of an enemy is imposing nationalism on entertainment. The game cannot train its players to be actual skilled special operations soldiers, nor is it likely to lure anyone into Islamic fundamentalism. It can grant neither heroism nor martyrdom. What it does do is make modern war into participatory cinema. That is its business."

Fairly philosophical and thought-provoking stuff.

Meanwhile scores are beginning to roll in for the game from various gaming websites. Eurogamer gave it 8/10 and Computer and Video Games gave it 8.5 out of 10.  it's currently earning a fairly respectable 8.5 over at Gamerankings.
