 - Barcode Battler, Kanojo, Cybird, Virtual Girlfriend, Japan

Barcode Battler was a strange temporary (in Japan at least) success back in the early 90’s. The clumsy looking handheld device worked by scanning barcodes of everyday household items to create characters, enemies or items to use in battle against other Barcode Battler owning friends.

Now the idea is back but instead of creating monsters and ogres, Barcode Kanojo creates for you a brand new girlfriend. Normally, we’d clarify this with a roll of the eyes and say ‘Only in Japan, eh?’ but the app is freely available in iTunes stores around the globe, including the UK.

Barcode Kanojo works exactly the same as Barcode Battler: you use the iPhone barcode scanner (note this is for iPhone 3GS and 4 only) to scan household items such as food tins, beers bottles, etc. This is in turn creates you a lovely new girl (or Kanojo) with which to call your own. You can then take her online to app creators Cybird’s virtual dating network to up her stats or even steal a girl from another player. You sly cad.

According to Cybird’s iTunes game description, there are 7 trillion possible combinations of female to create. Not only that, but depending on where in the world you are, the girls appearance should be more 'traditional' to your area.

If you fancy trading your current lady friend in for a slightly less demanding, albeit much less rewarding, female companion, then Barcode Kanojo is available for free right now.
