Could Bizarre Creations be top of Microsoft's PGR5 shopping list?

With Activision looking to offload Liverpool-based developers Bizarre Creations after poor sales of both Blur and James Bond: Bloodstone, could Microsoft be top of the list as a prospective buyer?

Recently MS hinted that they were shopping around for a third party developer to take on the Project Gotham Racing franchise. As any gamer knows, Bizarre Creations practically redefined the racing genre first with Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast, then the Project Gotham series on Xbox and Xbox 360. Those titles have traditionally always sold well but would the team even be interested in being shackled to another PGR game?

Activision has put nearly 200 staff at Bizarre Creations on 3 months notice, pending a final decision on the studio's future. What will happen to the name and any franchises developed by them is unclear at this point, though they're not exactly going to go hungry - several large publishers have expressed an interest in picking up the studio or at least filching staff from it.

Bizarre Creations aren't the only Activision studio with the sword of damocles hanging over them. Robomodo look like they'll be next in the grinder, after recent Tony Hawk title Shred sold only 3000 copies in its first couple of weeks of sales in the US. Activision's other hot property, Guitar Hero, has also suffered from awful sales too so it's a flipping good job they've still got World of Warcraft and Call of Duty, no?
