DotEmu are carving out a nice reputation for reviving forgotten gems (or not so forgotten in the case of R-Type) to a new audience on Apple’s iOS devices. Their latest project has seen them bring early 90’s Japanese arcade game Avenging Spirit back to life. Don’t worry if you haven’t heard of Avenging Spirit – it’s unlikely many outside of its native Japan has either!

For those of us in the western world, the story of Avenging Spirit begins when a chap sees his girlfriend taken away by a mysterious crime syndicate who then proceed to pump the unfortunate fellow full of lead. Not one to take this kind of thing lying down, he returns as a spirit with the handy ability to possess his enemies. Thus he sets off to rescue his young lady and avenge those dastardly swines who popped a cap in his ass.

The game begins with a brief tutorial on how to possess an enemy. To do this you simply hover over them and tap the ‘possess’ button (which then reverts to the shoot/action button). Once you’ve possessed someone, you use them to battle your way through the other baddies using whatever weapon or skills they have.

Enemies range from throwing star wielding ninjas and gun-totting gangsters to the more zany women who roll large white balls at you.

The game is presented in two ways – full screen and windowed. Unfortunately neither work that well. In full screen mode the game runs fine but doesn’t look as sharp. The controls are also rather big and take up too much room (although DotEmu have said an update is already in the works to change this). In windowed mode the game looks much better as are the controls, but for some reason the game doesn’t seem to run as smoothly. This is a shame especially as the game requires at least an iPhone 3GS or 3rd Gen iPod Touch in order to install.

Being an early 90’s scrolling platform shooter, you can bet your last 10p on things being tough. To combat this DotEmu have included a freeplay mode where lives and energy bars go out of the window. Your possessed character will still lose energy and have to be replaced with other baddies though. The arcade mode gives you 5 lives but does allow you to restart from each stage as you complete them.

Fans of classic coin-op platform shooters will almost certainly enjoy blasting through the 6 stages of Avenging Spirit. For everyone else, it’s probably best to come back after the initial teething problems have been ironed out in the first update.
