A new AI routine developed in conjunction with Microsoft's Kinect camera for Xbox 360 looks set to eliminate lag issues players are still experiencing with the controller-free gaming device.

Despite Microsoft's previous assurances that Kinect "is as fast as pressing a controller button" (something I'd refute while trying to get the thing to behave during Kinect Adventures sessions), MS Cambridge Research have been beavering away trying to get the camera to recognise your flailing limbs a little faster.

They've developed an AI routine that initially ran on supercomputers but has now been adapted to parse for common body shapes, types and movements at 200 times per second on the 360's processor. This means that Kinect can scan, identify and translate movement a couple of times quicker than it currently does.

We've heard rumours about MS claiming they can firmware-patch existing Kinect setups with more sensitivity. Let's see if 2011 heralds the year they make good on that promise.

Here's an entertaining geek reel showing the new routines in action.
