Australian iPhone developer Firemint, the team behind the hit Flight Control and Real Racing titles has confirmed that it's been snapped up by EA.

I suspect this won't be the last time you hear about one of the big boys snapping up one of the relatively small fry, with many large publishers realising that the slightly amended old adage of "if you can't beat 'em, buy 'em" ringing true. Especially so in the mobile space.

A statement from Firemint reads:

"The Firemint team is remarkable for its critical and commercial success,” said Barry Cottle, executive VP and GM of EA Interactive. “Having them as part of EAi will accelerate our position as worldwide leader in game development for mobile devices and online gaming platforms."

Let's hope that EA lets this talented team continue to run in isolation but with the creative freedom afforded from knowing that someone bigger than them is footing the bill.
