Draw-Race-2--iPod--Review Draw Race 2 (iPod) Review

 - Draw Race 2, iPod, iTunes, Apple, Don't push me

The original Draw Race was a bit of a sleeper hit upon its release. But Draw Race 2, from the amount of high scores it has on the iTunes store, is anything but a sleeper hit. It’s going down a treat. I’m therefore at a loss as to why it didn’t with me, especially as I enjoyed the (rather short) prequel.

Initially it’s as fun as the original, and the new rather lush visuals are a welcome addition. But about a quarter of the way through, I found myself thinking ‘is this all?’

I’d found the key to success early on; draw a fast line just after the apex of any corner, slow the line down to a crawl about three quarters of the way down the straight, and repeat. This method has taken me to the very last championship, with only a handful of levels needing to be replayed in order to get all three gold medals on each stage, and it works for all but one type of track (the ovals).

There are a number of different looking tracks, with loads of vehicles to drive, but many of the tracks are locked to one or two vehicles at most, and there’s no incentive to opt for anything other than the faster of the two. Sadly the tracks get repeated too often (or have such small differences to the layout that you don’t really notice them changing), and as the vehicles you can choose from are almost always the same for each stage, repetitivity soon sets in.

There are other issues too. A couple of the balloon stages (each championship has at least one of these) don’t scroll enough and therefore you can’t reach some of the balloons, and your vehicle sometimes completely ignores a slow line that you’ve drawn and instead continues to speed around a corner.

Thankfully many of the above issues disappear in the rather excellent World League mode (which competes you with players just above and just below your current skill level). Certainly the difficulty level issues go away, as the above method won’t get you far against real opposition.

In addition to the online league you can also play multiplayer on the same device, with each player taking turns to draw their race. It works well, although it can be difficult to get four people crowding around an iPod each trying to push their speed boost button while also trying to watch the action on screen.

But despite the well-implemented online and local multiplayer modes, Draw Race 2 still ended up leaving me feeling a little under whelmed. I’m in the minority with that feeling – that much is clear. A lot of people appear to be getting a lot of mileage out of this, but it’s far too easy, far too repetitive and far too skill-lite for it to click with me.

I love it. It's the rally game I've been waiting for since Rallisport Challenge 2 (and it's a lot more technical / satisfying than that!) ...
