Playing catchup after a couple of years in the wasteland of not owning a tidy enough iOS device for gaming, one thing I've missed are good solid puzzlers. They're the sort of thing that the iPhone and iPod Touch are absolutely made for. But how do they translate to the iPad, where visual splendour and that delicious screen are made for greater things?

If Koozac is any measure of the cheaper end of the iOS puzzler market, it's all good news. Koozac might just be a tidy and slick spin on the match-3 drop-down puzzler genre but it's the equivalent of a really slow burning fuse. Like playing Tetris on the easiest level and watching things slowly descend into Chaos, Koozac fools you into thinking that it's ridiculously easy and unchallenging.

Koozac's puzzle modes challenge both your reaction skills and your mental arithmetic skills. You're presented with a simple selection of numbered tiles at the bottom of the screen, and a 'objectives' bar at the top left tells you the number sum you have to achieve in a column in order to get rid of those fixed tiles.

It's a brutally simple idea and at first it's easy to get lulled into a false sense of security as you swiftly see off the first couple of dozen grids. Then the pressure and speed ramps up to the point where chaos reigns, and blindly throwing tiles onto the play area is the only way to keep your head above water, figuratively speaking.

Any game like this needs to give the player the ability to brag about their prowess. Koozac integrates neatly with Facebook (which, given the game's heritage, makes a lot of sense).

You might already be sick to death of drop puzzlers, and the fairly repetitive gameplay definitely means that the game might end up appealing to scorehounds only. Given the latest batch of content on the iTunes store though, it does actually make a fairly refreshing change from all those tower run games for sure.

The main attraction is definitely the price. Koozac might not be out to reinvent the wheel, but for 69p it's robust slick puzzle gaming with plenty of modes and that instant 'pick up and play / can't put it down' appeal that a good iOS puzzler needs. If you really feel that your life won't be complete without another drop-down puzzler in it, go get.
