It was quite a surprise to see Kings of Casual, G5 Games publish the rather obscure Pilot Brothers title late last year. Considering they usually concentrate on time management and hidden objects games that are friendly enough for the casual mobile gamer to play, the devilish difficulty of Pilot Brothers was quite a switch. Now they are back with the sequel, aptly titled Pilot Brothers 2.

Once again the two brothers, Chief and Colleague are the star turns as they investigate the kidnapping of their cat, Arsenic by chef Sumo who has could seemingly teach Heston a thing or two about experimental cooking.

Anyone who played the first Pilot Brothers game will be instantly at home with how the game works as essentially everything is exactly the same once again. You control both brothers by simply tapping on their in-game characters or on the little icons located in the lower left of the screen. Each brother interacts with the scenery and objects differently, although there are quite a few times when this isn’t handled with any particular logic.

Each scene is pretty much one long puzzle that needs to be solved by a chain of actions performed by each brother. What this boils down to is plenty of trial and error as you test out what will happen with all the hotspots and objects with each brother until a solution begins to form. Seeing as the solutions are pretty wacky and indeed, even the actual goal of the level often isn’t clear from the beginning, may mean that some players find the whole thing rather frustrating. However when you do work out the chain and see it all coming together you certainly deserve to feel pleased with yourself.

It’s fairly inevitable that you will become stuck at some point during the game. As an indication of how hard to work out some puzzles are the fact that you can, after a few minutes of starting a scene, watch a video run through of the entire chapter should give you an idea!

Despite the difficulty it’s a somewhat disappointing that the game is fairly short, despite being stuck for ages on the quite frankly bastard ‘identity parade’ projector puzzle...

The art style is superb though with an undoubted Eastern European cartoon feel to them along with the humour in the animations and voices.

Scoring the game almost feels a bit pointless really as players will either hate the slightly obscure puzzle solutions and simply give up or they will become engrossed in trying to save Arsenic from becoming a cat burger. This certainly isn’t a game for everyone, but it’s certainly something a bit different and well worth giving a try to see how you get on.

It's well worth trying out if they have a free version see how you get on. The solution to the first puzzle gives you a good idea of what you're in for if you decide to press on.

I love it. It's the rally game I've been waiting for since Rallisport Challenge 2 (and it's a lot more technical / satisfying than that!) ...
