While there may have been some hope on Nintendo's part that Wii U would restore parity between the current generation of consoles, allowing Nintendo to have a flagship console that could handle the multi-platform games that the Wii had been missing out on, the sad truth is that the Wii U is receiving something of a cold shoulder from publishers.

E3 has seen the gulf expand even more, with Wii U further outclassed by Sony and Microsoft's next wave of machines, while Nintendo's own highlights package paints a picture of a company retreating into their own corner and playing by themselves.

There's perhaps a glimmer of truth to the idea that Nintendo's main audience these days are those who are primarily after Nintendo content, and the list of Wii U exclusives does point towards a certain type of interested community. Nintendo must be banking on their audience being Nintendo enthusiasts, because support from third parties appears to be dwindling fast. EA has neglected to bring its annual major sporting titles to the Wii U for the 2014 season, leaving a huge gaming staple missing in the Wii U's library this year.

Even more damning are recent reports that EA doesn't presently see Wii U as a "viable platform", according to non-sugar-coated comments from EA's Labels President Frank Gibeau.

All too often you'll see games come out for both PS3 and Xbox 360, with no Wii U version in sight. But how much is this actually happening, and what exactly is the Wii U missing out on? And do the multi-platform games that Wii U does get make up for the ones it lacks? Do the Wii U exclusives make up for the games that are kept only for PS3 and Xbox 360?

We had a look at all game releases since a month prior to the Wii U came out, up till now. It's reasonable to say that any game released during this time period that made it to both 360 and PS3 would have made it to the Wii U if the publishers had any intention of doing so. Obviously we ignored any game that didn't come out on both Xbox 360 and PS3, as they can't be considered to be console multi-platform releases. We also ignored any game that didn't get a Metacritic score, assuming such games to be trivial.

With that said, here is the grand list of games that came to both PS3 and Xbox 360 during the Wii U's lifespan, but have failed to make it to the Wii U:

The games on the next list are the truly multi-platform titles: games available for the Wii U that are also available for PS3 and Xbox 360. Dates are given where the game was available for PS3 and 360 long before the Wii U hit the shelves.

It is evident that the number of multiplatform titles the Wii U got is dwarfed by the number it did not. Quite a few of the multiplatform titles the Wii U received are belated releases that the PS3 and 360 were already featuring as far back as October 2011.

Nintendo's own Wii U exclusives are sure to pick up the slack, here, but with 3rd party support dwindling as time goes on, this may eventually become the Wii U's only trick.
