Travel-back-to-Morrowind-by-way-of-Skyrim Travel back to Morrowind by way of Skyrim

Ah, Morrowind, how I loved you. In this writer's opinion the greatest of the Elder Scrolls games, far surpassing Oblivion and Skyrim with its detailed, deep storyline and world - a densely-packed island riddled with secrets that took months to explore, particularly when paired with the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions.

These days however, it's getting a bit long in the tooth - and despite some excellent visual mods aiming to bring the game more in line with what we expect from the graphics of a modern game, there's no escaping from those low-poly models or crude animation, or the ever-so-slightly broken levelling mechanic.

But those eagle-eyed chaps over at Eurogamer have discovered something that could renew your dreams of playing the classic first-person roleplay-em-up with shiny modern graphics (thanks, EG!).

If you've ever seen or played Skyrim and thought "I wish Morrowind still looked that good", then you're in luck. If you own Morrowind: Game of the Year edition, or the base game plus its two expansions, then you will be able to download and run an early version of the Skywind mod and transplant all that nostalgic role-playing goodness into the Skyrim engine (ignore the name - it's a relic of when the mod was originally intended for Oblivion, before later being ported across to Skyrim). It's been in development for a long time, with only sporadic updates, but if you're anything like me and continue to hold a torch for Morrowind, then this is definitely worth keeping a close eye on.

Skywind is only in Alpha stage at the moment so it's still pretty buggy and missing a lot of content, but the promise is clearly there and it's obvious that the people behind it share the same passion for Bethesda's classic game as many others do.

In the meantime, take a look at this trailer (complete with a beautiful piano rendition of the Elder Scrolls main theme):
