Quake Wars Sneak Peak

It's not long now until Quake wars is here. (recently gone gold) In fact, at the time of writing this timer claims it's released in 22 days, 23 hours, 58 mins! However, this doesn't mean that you need to wait for the end of September to arrive though. You can have a go at the game right now if you want. Read on for some more background on the game or skip to the bottom for more details on how to get and play the game.

Before you go off and dive into the game, I want to take a moment to "manage your expectations" though, or rather avoid mismanaging them. The full name of the game is Quake Wars: Enemy Territory. If you were envisaging a Quake 4 like game with Quake 2 or Quake III Arena like multiplayer, you will be disappointed, unless the described was a dreadful vision to you. The division of labour between the parts of that name separated with a colon is clear. Quake provides the setting, Enemy Territory the game play.

If you have been following the game a bit already, you will be aware that it has vehicles. If you haven't been following the game at all, well .. it has vehicles. For some of you, the mention of "vehicles" will bring a familiar taste to your mouth, probably it's Battlefield flavoured. And who hasn't played it in one of the 4 or 5 flavours it's available in?

Quake Wars: ET will be a different beast though. I currently can't actually claim to know this for a fact given the limited playtime I had. It's a bit of speculation on my part. However I'll be happy to share with you why I believe it to be so.

Enemy Territory, a sort of half aborted follow up to Return to Castle Wolfenstein that was released for free to the community, plus RtCW itself have been my online shooters of choice for about 5 years now. RtCW's multi player offered such a fantastic teamplay experience. It had 4 classes, mirrored on each side and if both sides treated it like just another fragfest multiplayer, it could be just that. However, with a few experienced players and voice comms, you could swap those four classes on the fly and create formidable and vicious little assault groups that cut through any opposition unable to coordinate and work as a team tehmselves.Enemy territory added an additional class, mines, vehicles to escort and much more to the mix. Team work became complexer and harder to achieve but all the more rewarding. From what a read and saw so far, Quake Wars largely copies the class structure from Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory but adds in a lot of new stuff again. This should give some new dynamics to the teamwork and yet again raise the bar. A satisfying team based experience will be even harder to come by but will again be a lot more rewarding.
One down side of such a team focussed game however is that this amazing depth stays hidden to many people and most servers will offer up a chaotic fragfest which is quite dreadful after a while. The satisfaying teamwork may well remain hidden to the players that take a passing interest in the game.

But why speculate. GO TRY FOR YOURSELF AND FIND OUT.
Yeah, that's right. You can play the game already.
There's no official demo out yet (I think) but there is a Beta2 version of the game. You can either download it from Fileplanet or use Bittorrent.

after you install the game and run it for the first time, you will be prompted to create a user account. You need a beta key for online play (on the beta servers) but you also have the option of installing the game for offline play. This does not require a key. (for a better explanation, have a look at this page) As you will be playing offline, you will need to start your own server. As this is the beta, only one map is available. If you leave the default settings, your server will load, filled with bots. You can observe the gameplay as a spectator to get a feel for where the objectives are. You can also join either side and throw yourself into the slightly confusion fray. The bots are pretty good, it won't replicate online play 100% but it will give you a pretty good impression of how the game plays with a full server.

Many thanks to wolfensteinresource.com for the useful information and Corecrusher supplying the download locations for the files.
