The Wii console is the industry's poster-child for active gaming - but physical activity can hurt. Andrew Das found that out for himself when he investigated the Wii injury "epidemic" for the New York Times.

While significant injuries are few and far between, but there does seem to be a national proliferation of more minor aches, strains and swellings, something Das lovingly labels "Nintendinitis".

Don't worry, gamers, it's not just the Wii. A rise in orthopaedic injuries is typically seen with any fad, like, say, skateboarding. But unlike skateboarding, there's a lot of older folks getting into this fad - and a lot of people who aren't yet accustomed to regular exercise.

None For MultiformatPlaying in a small space leads to twisted knees and sprained ankles. Playing too long leads to repetitive stress problems. And flicking with the wrist instead of using a full swing is in fact the exact motion that leads to tennis elbow. So play in a big open space with plenty of swing action, okay?

Medical cases include a 22-year-old whose arm swelled to twice its size after an epic Wii session. Hmm, that sounds like the setup to a colourful joke.

Check out the article for more startling cases and the possible reason why kids aren't as susceptible to "Nintendinitis".
