Lobster monsters? Cartoon violence? UFOs? What the sheeting foch?

A new Burnout title being developed by Criterion Games has been outed by the Australian Classification Board and also on a few Linkedin CVs.

The scant details about the new project, Criterion's first Burnout game since Paradise in 2008 make mention of Crash Junctions (hooray!) but also a lot of other extremely weird stuff.

From the ACB entry:

This is an action game in which players earn points for creating traffic pileups. From a top-down perspective, players initiate crashes by driving ‘cartoony’ vehicles (e.g., cars, trucks, vans, buses) into busy intersections; multiple crashes trigger score multipliers and rack up large ‘bills’ of property damage. Each level is accompanied by crashing sounds, small explosions, and vocal encouragement (e.g., ‘Cool,’ ‘Maximum Carnage!’). In some levels, players are instructed to crash into police cars (e.g., ‘Crash them before they bust you!’); in other sequences, oversized airplanes, tornados, lobster monsters, and UFOs slide across the screen, destroying any vehicles in their path.

OK some of it sounds very much like the hallowed Crash Mode we all grew to know and love in Burnout 2 but I'm not too sure about this cartoony vehicles stuff. Remember ModNation Racers? Remember how well that sold?

It's Criterion, naturally so we're still hoping that the team manage to completely reinvent Burnout, retain some of the original spirit, and somehow make all this weird stuff into something cool.

Either way, you're going to find out a hell of a lot more at E3 this year.

Burnout Crash, sometime in the winter, on Xbox 360 and PS3. Be there or be kicking EA up the arse and hoping they'll do an SSX style about-face.
