We like to think that all press releases are specifically timed so as to interrupt, disrupt and deflect attention away from other companies' announcements. And so with that in mind, surely Valve's reveal of Left4Dead2 which came smack bang in the middle of Microsoft's E3 press conference was more than convenient.

Anyway, the game features deeper co-operative play with more melee oriented weapons such as a chainsaw, frying-pan, axe and baseball bat. And Valve's much heralded AI director also sees an upgrade with version 2.0 taking dynamic gameplay "TO THE NEXT LEVEL", by altering procedurally generated weather effects, enemy population, world objects and pathways. Which all sounds marvellous fun.

L4D2 also features new survivors, boss zombies, weapons and items and is a much larger game than the original with more co-operative campaings, an ehanced Versus mode campaign and maps for the newly added Survival mode available from launch. A launch which is set for the 17th November on PC and Xbox360.

Gabe Newell states: " "A large part of how Left 4 Dead became 2008's top-selling new IP on Xbox 360 and the PC was the custom-tailored gameplay made possible by the AI Director. With the knowledge gained from creating the original, new technology, and a passionate team, L4D2 will set a new benchmark for cooperative action games."

While Doug Lombardi added that: "Left 4 Dead was backed by our most aggressive advertising campaign to date, and resulted in a top 5 showing on two platforms during holiday 2008. Left 4 Dead 2 is a larger game and will be supported with even more consumer and retail advertising programs than the original."

So there you have it. With this and Dead Rising 2, the Zombies are back!
