One piece of news that went by largely un-noticed in the past week was Rockstar's announcement that it's bringing the seminal GTA III to iOS and Android devices in celebration of its 10 year anniversary. Has it really been that long?

Support is initially limited to the more powerful devices out there such as the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S while on Android only the Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atris, Samsung Galaxy, Acer Iconia, Asus EEE Pad, Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab devices are supported.

Meanwhile, the first unoffiicial footage of the game in action has surfaced from New York's Comic Con event. As ever, doubts remain over just how playable the game will be using the touch-screen interface, and, as you can see in this early version, there's a whole host of on-screen context-sensitive buttons to perform different actions and the action will surely be lacking compared to that of its console brethren. Still, the fact that the game even exists on portable devices is a staggering technical achievement.

Due for release during 'fall', those of you walking around with shiny new 4Ss will have just the game to show off to your poor colleagues and friends.

We can only assume that Vice City will follow shortly thereafter.

Shit. I really need an update.

looks a little sparse doesn't it? Surely though, for modern smartphone devices more powerful than the PSP this shouldn't be that much of a stretch?

The controls look terrible.

Aye, the controls on Chinatown Wars on iOS finally stopped me playing it. Gave me even more of a claw than playing it on DS or PSP did.
