MTV Buys Harmonix

After Activision's recent acquisition of RedOctane, it was perhaps always inevitable that one of the big hitters would follow suit and snap up the increasingly popular developer Harmonix. And so it happened with MTV confirming they've snapped up the Massachusetts based company for a cool $175 million.

MTV has previously worked very closely with Harmonix most recently on the promotion of, (perhaps the deciding factor in this acquisition) the excellent Guitar Hero, with the game featuring very highly on MTV with many promotions and competitions. And it's expected this relationship will continue to flourish particularly as the massively popular PS2 title proved to be very popular with the so-called MTV generation.

"The acquisition of Harmonix will deepen MTV's connection to its audience via online, mobile and console music gaming, and expand the relationship with both labels and artists through the creation of games based on classic songs as well as future album releases," said Christina Norman, president of MTV.

"The acquisition of Harmonix advances MTV Networks' strategy of connecting with target audiences by creating immersive, multi-platform environments that extend to every device they use," said Judy McGrath, chairman and CEO, MTV Networks.

"Harmonix is an innovator in giving audiences new and dynamic ways to interact with music, and I couldn't be more excited to welcome the company into MTV Networks' strong portfolio of multi-platform brands," she added.

"We are very excited to combine our unique assets in the music and gaming space with one of the most recognised brands in the music world," said Alex Rigopulos, Harmonix's CEO.

"We look forward to continuing to create innovative ways for people to enjoy music."

Now that we've got all the boring business stuff out of the way it's worth pointing out that fans of Guitar Hero should be massively pleased with this outcome. MTV as a company has a hell of a lot of both financial and corporate clout and this strength and worldwide recognition will be hopefully utilised by Harmonix when it comes to further developing the Guitar Hero franchise. Harmonix admitted themselves recently that their own financial restrictions were a large obstacle they had to overcome when trying to get the rights to use certain songs by certain bands on the original Guitar Hero. So here's hoping the strength of MTV will add a whole lot of weight to their efforts and that MTV will help bankroll their attempts to include all those songs we wanted in the original!

And remember, with Publisher Acitivision recently confirming that Guitar Hero will be released across all significant formats from 2007, there's only one place for the GH franchise now and that's straight to the top. That is of course assuming there's no heroin overdose or shotgun suicide!
