Bearded freaks and driver twiddlers the world over are in mourning. The Playstation 3 is about to lose its "second operating system" option, meaning that steam radio enthusiasts and tweakers will lose the ability to put Linux on their PS3s after the next update.

Sony's official blog states that users will need to back up any data held on the "Other OS" partition, as that data will be unrecoverable after the update.

Did you install Linux on your PS3? If so, why? Let us know if you're upset or completely indifferent to the change. We'd love to hear from you.

Does anyone actually have Linux on the PS3? I wonder why Sony is now removing this feature now though...?

There was talk about it being possible to hack the PS3 via Linux, if I remember correctly.

Bit of pre-emptive door shutting before the horse bolts then. Makes sense as they left it a little bit too late with the PSP.

Worth noting the slim models lacked the option to begin with.

With the lack of backwards compatibility on these new consoles, I think Steam releases are the way to go for any new tables....
