Portal 2 pits PC and PS3 owners against each other online

Though Steamworks isn't being allowed anywhere near the 360, for the time being, PC and PS3 owners will at least get to play together - or fight with each other in Portal 2.

Valve have been beavering away trying to finalise netcode to enable steamworks to effectively cross pollinate online game play between console and PC. It's not a new idea, but it's never quite worked as smoothly as it could in past endeavours.

Exciting stuff. Wonder if the PS3 version will have mouse and keyboard support though...

I'm pretty certain the online play in Portal 2 is cooperative, not competitive. As such, no 'fighting each other' will occur, which means the Playstation 3 won't necessarily need mouse and keyboard support in order to remain a compelling choice.

I'm interested to see how they handle voice communication amongst the two, along with a lot of the abilities normally tied to playing Steam games on PC. I can't wait to see the extent with which Steam is supported on the PS3.

My wildest dream would be a partnership. "Playstation Store powered by Steam". That sort of thing.

You might be right in that there's no VS mode as such but I'd read somewhere else that there will be competitive elements to some of the challenges, where a quicker eye / trigger finger will still count.

Plus - let's face it, your friend is on a platform over some lava and you're armed with a portal gun...whatyagonnado :)
