Where does the time go? Back in the heady days of 2009 there was no American Wotsit snorting his own farts in the oval office, nor a UK desperately trying to kick itself in the balls as hard as it possibly can. But there was Red Faction: Guerilla by Volition, the lovely people responsible for the Saints Row series.

THQ Nordic have chosen to show the game some love in this so called Re-Mars-tered edition, fully reworking the graphics with juicy new textures and specular maps, along with updated shadows and shaders and all those other things that make games look not shit. You also get native 4K support on PC, 900p at 60fps on Xbox One, 1800p at 60fps or 4K at 30fps on Xbox One X, 1080p at 60fps on PS4 and finally either 1500p at 60fps or 4K at 30fps on PlayStation Pro.

Anyway, enough with the numbers, what exactly is Red Faction: Guerilla all about I hear you cry. Well, chum, you'll take on the role of Alec Mason, who after his brother is murdered in front of him decides to rise up against those big old meanies the Earth Defence Force with the help of the titular, freedom fighting Red Faction. Yeah the story is straight up balls to be honest, but never let that get in the way of a fun game.

Thankfully Red Faction: Guerilla Re-Mars-tered is a fun game, After the first few missions, which can be a little, shall we be charitable and say tame? Things really kick off when the world opens up proper. You decide where to go, what equipment and vehicles to utilise, which missions or activities to tackle in the order of your choosing. And then things start blowing the fuck up and it is glorious. Toppling buildings on to the heads of baddies never gets old, and that's before you count in playing dominoes with watchtowers and making shortcuts into enemy bases with a sledgehammer/ truck/ giant stompy robot.

Completing missions and activities nets you useful perks whether it be sweet loot, upgrades or boosting the morale of the sector, causing more people to rally to your aid when you call for help. It's a great system in practice and keeps the game moving at pace. If you ever get bored though, you could always dip your toes into the multiplayer component, but to be quite honest it's a little quiet there and nowhere near as much fun as the main game proper.

Red Faction: Guerilla Re-Mars-tered is a worthy upgrade then, it's had nips and tucks in all the right places, but being set on Mars, it was never going to have the most beautiful environments no matter how many pixels you throw at it, but what it has in spades is lovely, fun gameplay you can dip in and out of at your own pace and it'll always leave you with a smile upon your face.
