Will the Playstation network cost you in 2010?

It's been mumbled about in quiet tones at Sony financial meetings...

Now a poor faceless worker drone has made mention of charges for the PSN service, probably after being sharply shoved from behind by Sony execs further up the food chain.

Chatting to Nikkei, Sony's Chief Technical Officer Masayuki Chatani (the guy who put the 1200/75 baud modem on the end of the downloads and updates server) talked about the "Sell and forget model" and its unsustainability.

Chatani said "Servers and the like have running costs, and we would face difficulties if our business depended solely on the sell-and-forget model. After we sell the hardware, though, we continue to sell products such as content and services. We expect to see considerable growth in digital content, such as game download services, avatar items and the like. We can also accept payment in a growing number of ways. In addition to single-payment packaged software, there are also schemes like monthly fees or per-item charges. I think this variety of payment methods will bring about a diverse range of playing methods, too."

Diverse range of me not playing a thing online if it costs me, yep.

It'll be interesting to see how this one pans out. One of the biggest selling points made by Sony in the past about their online service is that it doesn't cost you to get into a multiplayer game like it does on Xbox Live. Is all that about to change? Don't be surprised.

Sony would have to offer something significant over and above the current PSN service to tempt me to pay for it.
Their difficulty in adopting an XBL Gold/Silver model is that people would be massively pissed off at having to pay for something that, until now, has been free. But then if the current PSN service becomes the equivilent of Silver, what the heck can they offer to justify a Gold-type membership?

I think multiplayer would need to be a damned sight more consistent and slick than it is at present. TBH though, if they DID start charging purely for multiplayer, Home and online scoreboard stuff etc (server based stuff), then I'd happily just shrug off the online stuff entirely. Would suck arse though if they started charging you to download demos.

I love it. It's the rally game I've been waiting for since Rallisport Challenge 2 (and it's a lot more technical / satisfying than that!) ...
