I read the Beeb take on this earlier. Horribly full of glaring factual anomalies (as is any Beeb games coverage) but aye it made me feel old.

125 for a 16K speccy and people say today's stuff's overpriced. Holy pooplops!

i can't believe that the spectrum is 3.5months older than me! The good point is that by the time i was old enough to appreciate it, i had the +128k version to play on :D

Speccy 48K was my first computer too, best thing ever.

I'm slightly disappointed that 25 years later Sir Clive is not living a life of luxury surrounded by busty blondes, but seems to spend most of his time playing poker on Edgeware Road. More disappointing still is that he's not even that good.

You'd think he'd be some bad ass autistic-style card counting mofo.

My first computer too. I got the 16K one as a birthday present, and then found out there was a 48K one. Bloody early adopters.

Probably has a wobbly RAMPak at his age.

lol.

Sure I read a biography somewhere (I should probably check before I type but can't be arsed)saying he wasn't super tech savvy, he just came up with a way of rapidly turning on and off the screen display for calculators that massively reduced the battery requirements allowing for a truly pocket calculator. After that I think he had men with elbow patches to do the thinking for him.

I think he's some big noise at MENSA though so he's no dunce, although being in MENSA probably means he's completely socially inept instead.

I got my 48k for Christmas 1983; it quite literally changed my world.

I qualify for MENSA and relatively speaking I'm pretty thick, it doesn't take that much to get in.

True but hasn't he had a go on some really, really lovely lasses in his time? I'm sure i've seen pictures of him out and about with some top quality tartage.

Maybe.

It still mystifies me that there are several clearly very wealthy people at the casino I go to, and rather than going out and discovering the delights the world has to offer they seem to spend pretty much every night in a room playing cards.

ho hum.

Got my 16K one for my 14th birthday and 23 years later I'm still arsing about with computers.

I'm not sure whether I should be patting Sir Clive on the back or punching him out. :-)

Spectrum BASIC manual is still one of the best computer books I've ever read.

Aye I'm sure Sir Clive is indirectly responsible for my IT "career" too. The bast. Building a ZX81 from a kit build gave me the taste for computers / electronics.

To think I could've been working for the Forestry Commission by now, with a huge beard had I zigged instead of ZXed...

I'm another of Clive's IT babies. If it hadn't have been for the Spectrum I wouldn't have known what direction to head after I found out my eyesight wasn't good enough for my dream job - which was as a pilot.

ZX81 was my first, although the Spectrum had just come out. Then it was a 16k (issue 3), upgraded it with chips to 48k and then a Spectrum+ keyboard kit, then eventually a 128k model. I loved the heatsink down the side of that model.

We won't mention any of the A*str*d models will we. No.

We had a 16k speccy, I don't remember exactly when we got it up the games we got with it included Psion's version of Space Invaders, so I guess it was fairly early :)

My Stepdad bought me a 16k speccy for christmas. In true Peej style, I'd already bought a few games as I knew I'd be getting one.

I bought Manic Miner, Chequered Flag and Pssst.

I played a lot of Pssst on Christmas Day. A lot of Pssst. And spent most of the afternoon typing in a dreadful game from the back of Computer and Video Games, which ran for about 20 seconds before crashing its tits off.

First thing on January 2nd, I took the thing over to a small shop to get a 48K chip put in. Oh my, that was when it really all kicked off. Playing Manic Miner for the first time and falling hopelessly and utterably in love with it. Never looked back since.

I spent hours typing in a programme from the back of Sinclair User, only to see the machine crash when I tpyed "run". Thus ended my brief dalliance with programming.
