Muchas gracias dude for the Bond Blu Ray, it turned up safe and well this morning, courtesy of your mum.

NOW I can find out what all this blu ray hoojafuzz is about. Ace stuff, and bloody grateful to you mate, cheers.

I had a game of UEFA in the wee hours of the morning with Trip recently, seems like a jolly nice chap for what its worth!

I love Trip. I've never met him, I just do.

Edit: Oh aye, and his mum.

The film was dazzling too. Very much a "stripped down" Bond but as others have said, I spent so much time gazing in child-like awe at the scenery, the texture of things and...er...people's blotchy and highly detailed wrinkly skin and bloodshot eyes that I will have to watch it all over again!

It looks absolutely fantastic in HD. I can't believe how much better it is than the DVD version, which itself was great.

The quality of the picture has made me think twice about buying anymore major releases on DVD!

The slightly upsetting thing is that's precisely right. I think it's made me suddenly realise that I'm going to have a serious quandary when it comes to re-buying a few stock-in-trade favourites in my collection. Fuck it, I swore I wouldn't buy Fifth Element a third time....GRRRR!

I'd hang on before you start updating your DVD collection to HD. You can guarantee that, just like with DVD, loads of the initial titles on the format will be given the special edition treatment in a couple of years time.

I've already double-dipped on too many DVDs to start doing the same with Blu-Ray ;-)

Good point - And in some cases, I really will pick and choose with Blu Ray. I'll need to know that the thing's just not some abortionate cheapo upscaled nastiness.

Whilst Trip is a legend, I'm a bit miffed that he got a free Bond Blu-ray when he doesn't even live in the region but Sony didn't give me one. Not that I really deserved one, of course.

I think this is a great site for all DVD/HD news.

The reviews are very informative about the technical details of the transfers. In fact this is as much a focus of the reviews as the actual film itself. There is also a great section dedicated to classic films on DVD and HD-DVD/Blu-Ray.

Oooh! Good linkage there...!

Tell you what though, I think there might have been some Sony product placement in the Bond film. Just a little.

LOLed at the bit with Branson at the airport too. Frisk that hippy!

In an act of total pettiness, British Airways have cut the tiny clip of Branson from their in-flight version of the movie !

haha, glad it turned up OK.

@ilmaestro
I registered my PS3 at my mums address so I could use the UK store. It seems strange they sent me one at all. I didn't expect to get one, and had already bought it.

i got my ps3 on the friday after the release day, registered it straight away and quickly got my email saying i'd get a copy. but then it didn't turn up even though other peoples here were getting theirs. so yesterday i found a sony customer servicey email address and fired off a mail asking if they sent it.

i've still had no reply :( but when i got home yesterday i found it waiting on the doorstep :) damn it's a weenie thin case though. much thinner than my other bluray cases. i thought it was a cd or something before i'd opened it.

Yeah I was quite surprised at how tiny the box was. And how hard it was to get into. And how the Blu Ray disk STILL managed to become detached from the spindle in transit :) Bless those postal workers, they seem to have a knack for doing it in transit because when I put the thing back on the spindle and then tried to take it off again later it needed a team of trained sherpa weightlifters to do so :)

Yeah, I used my home address, too. I think it was Sony's way of saying 'think you're a loyal fan by buying one as soon as possible and paying a premium to get it to the UK just a day or two after Japanese launch, and then spending hours and hours over the next few weeks publicising it on one of Europe's larger gaming forums? Well think again. Not only do you not get a free TV, you don't even get a measly £20 film.'

I'm not bitter.

One thing I noticed about blu ray - and this might be just my DVD setups - but no massive pause in the middle of the film while the player changes layers. All my DVDs / Players do this. Some worse than others.

With the blu ray stuff, it didn't do it at all. Fantastic, bout bloody time!

/shudders at copy of Starship Troopers DVD that has to be "flipped" halfway through the film.

A lot of the early films were flippers. I ended up importing Starship Troopers as it annoyed me too much :)

Most Blu-ray stuff is still single-layer.

edit: Unless you specifically meant Casino Royale, which is dual-layer. Yeah, it's cool. Ignore me.

I bet it will look very good. I got the HD-DVD of Total Recall last week and the picture was beautiful. And damn I'd forgot how violent it was after the last few viewings being the TV version.

Hmmm good idea for a thread I think - "what HD-DVD films / Blu Ray films do you already own" type thing with marks out of 10 for each film's quality relative to its DVD counterpart.

Those 80's/early 90's action films were all really violent. Unfortunately they're all too interested in getting a Cert 15 these days...

I absolutely love Total Recall though. The violence is so incredibly over the top it's almost cartoony. But it's all about those quotes.

I'll add to the hidef love in and pimp this site as the one I use the most for reviews and stuff.

I didn't get the Casino Royale BD either but a kindly EG'er is sending me his spare.

I own:

HD - Riddick
HD - Unforgiven
HD - Serenity
HD - Batman Begins
BD - Talladega Nights
BD - The Departed

Despite play having a £5 dvd sale with some great films I find myself holding back unless it's a film I haven't seen, and really want to see. Guess the future of movie watching has arrived then!

You have a Zone A PS3 though don'tcha mappy?

Thing is, seems they're uber tough to get hold of from anyone UK based without paying through the nose for 'em (can you believe PLAY's prices for BD?)
