What the hell?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6638331.stm?ls

My question is: should it be illegal to own virtual child pr0n? Fucked up, maybe... but 3 years?

My answer: it's the Germans. They're all clearly fucking mental anyway. They banned Dead Rising and they'll pay when all our kids know how to deal with the eventual coming of the zombie hordes and theirs don't - oh, yes.

I reckon there should be a second life police unit. It'd be brilliant. They could give them all voices like the Sweeney. And give them theme music when they're on the case. Awesome.

Discuss.

I've got a lunchtime seminar on our Second Life presence next week. I can't wait to hear the university's justification for the whole shebang. Fucking huge waste of money just so that a few computing staff can spend all day chatting up virtual hoes...

Oh, and I'm not sure if I read it right, but if I did, it's funny that the investigators have to create ingame personas and do their investigations ingame, perhaps even in character :D

I can just imagine that when they find out who the guy is, they'll virtually chase him, too :)

We just refer to it as "no life" round here...

Unbelieveable that the Uni spent nearly 4 grand on this shit.

So the game makers are acting like this is the first they've heard about this? "Oh! Now that you bring it up and it's been in the news, we'll help the police find out what's going on!"

Come on, they must have known all along. Heck, why does anyone play that game anyway? To hump s***. They knew!

Bit of both, online Libraries for access to learning matterials, online seminars and discussion groups etc etc.

There is an article on the BBC about it all, can't be arsed to dig out the link though

Yup...

Oh and there's a dedicated member of staff from each of our Uni's divisions who just sit there all day on it. Fucking hell, how the hell did I miss out on that gig!!

(our division's avatar is a huge purple haired huge breasted goth with fishnets - called Alan Gay, I kid you not)

Anyway, you think 3 years in prison is bad? There was a guy in the US recently who had been found guilty of possesing child porn, anyone care to make a guess as to how many years he was sentenced with?

It was 200 years!

200!

It was based on 20 years per image, to run consecutively. Fucking disgraceful really.

Yeah, that story made me think: Can you be absolutely sure you haven't got a 'twenty year' image lurking somewhere in your *cough* collection?

Anyway, these are fun. :)

Speaking as what could be loosely termed an expert witness, I'm surprised they only just realised.

I spent about a month in SL all told and saw stuff so fucked up it baggers belief. In order to animate your avatar (which you can make into a small child are per the screenshot that's in one of the diary days) you have to to sit on things called poseballs, innocuous looking pink or blue spheres with text hovering over them saying what they do. My personal favourite was the FIST ball, of which I had many arranged into a large circle of fist which some 30 people partook of once. There were others called Daddy and Daughter and the seminal RAPE ball but the animations there in were fairly generic fucking manoeuvres. Just a little worrying when put into a play ground context at the bottom of a slide...

The SL police are non-existent, you may see the occasional Linden, but all in all anyone can get away with doing anything they like.

For some it's the internet in the form of a 3D world, spam, popups and porn included. For me it was a long dull road punctuated with the occasional roadkill of hilarity.

Yep, I saw the 'daddy and daughter' shit when I visited with DB in there. And the sheep. And the 'changing mat'. *shudder*

It's not real, though, even if it's all fairly disgusting. It's not fucking /real/, you shouldn't do jailtime for fantasy, no matter how fucked up it is.

I agree with that, it's Thought Police kind of stuff isn't it. I think the general point is that they're using Sadville to makes contacts and distribute kiddie porn, which is clearly very very bad

Yeah saw this and thought it was really worrying from a legal/thought police perspective, but didnt want to post it incase I came across as a bit..."dodgy uncle".

It'll be an interesting moral position in a few (ie loads) of years when the virtual models are photographic quality though. Where would we draw the line? Exclusively on "is it real or not"? I remember back in the day fakes of the Olsen twins face on someone elses body was considered childporn (or at least thats what they said on alt.binaries.celebrity.fakes)

Even though that's the sentence, maybe the cops don't usually go after people for it?

I mean, the guys were trading real pornography too, so maybe that's why they stopped turning a blind eye when otherwise they might.

How on Earth would you go about proving that virtual porn actually depicted children and not merely underdeveloped/role playing people of legal age? Except in really extreme obvious cases.
