I had a week off recently and after spending the weekend with family in Belgium, the gf and I drove on to Cologne in Germany. When we pulled into a petrol station for a break, a guy comes over to my car.

"Aaah you're from the UK. I'm from Dublin!"
*Beams*

Eurhm .. yeah. Excellent.

I was wondering if you could help me.

He then explained he was travelling to Hamburg (he was a good 500 miles away from it I think). He'd just filled up his tank with petrol. He had no more money on him (showed his wallet with about $15 in it) and he had arranged for his wife to send him money but due to the bank holiday, this had gone tits up. He wanted us to lend him some money under the assurance that he would pay it straight back to us two fold. he took of his two gold rings and wanted to give them to us as some sort of collateral. We give him €100 so he can take on more fuel and get to Hamburg. He'd pay us back €200 and we then send him his rings back.

He seemed pretty desperate. Prattled on and on. He seemed sincere and as far as a scam goes, it'd be pretty poor one, standing around in a Belgian petrol station with your Irish car (Right hand drive, Irish plates) waiting for UK drivers to pass by, giving them fake gold rings to extract a measly 70 pounds.

So what would you have done?

I explained to the man that I don't know real gold jewels from fake gold jewels (he got out a pocket knife and started scraping at the inside of his ring to proof it was real stuff) so I'd be reluctant to take his rings assuming it covers me should I never hear from him again. He seemed genuinely desperate though. Genuinely concerned that he didn't speak French or German, so he could only turn to us. Passing Uk people (well not really).

In the end I gave the man €50 as it should have gotten him to Hamburg. He wanted €100 as the €50 would all go to gas and he had no money for food or drinks but hey. If you head off abroad without cash nor credit/debit cards that's your problem.

The gf insisted he keep his rings on that basis that he'll either repay us as promised and the whole sending gold via mail thing is a bit cumbersome and risky. Or he'll rip us off in which case the rings wouldn't be worth having anyway.

It's been 2 weeks yesterday I've not heard of the lad since nor seen any money of course. Sent him a txt last week to remind him but can't be arsed faffing about chasing up some stranger over £35.

*sigh*

If i could spare the money i'd have helped him like you did. At least if he was genuine you did the right thing, if he was a scammer then he got some money but not what he wanted.

Either way, your conscience is clear.
Anyone you know go past the station?
See if he's still there doing the same thing.

It's pretty much a classic con.

Did you see him fill up his car with the money then drive off or did you leave before he did?

Yup but next time it happens you can say "Sorry mate, last person to ask me conned me."

Mind you it's rare that i'd have £35 to spare, what with a videogame and vodka habit to support so i'd probably just have used "Skint mate, sorry". :)

I first thought he needed money to fill up. He had just filled his car though and wasn't going to make it to Hamburg on one tank.

See, if I were him, I'd have avoided that part. He's getting freakin' obvious at that point.

I give money to no-one I don't know and, based on previous experience, no more than £10 to a mate.

/lent £5k to boss

/eventually got £5k + £500 back o/

I'd have told the bog trotting pike where to sling it and pointed him in the correct direction. If the thick bastard can't take care of himself, why the fuck should I have to?

Cut him and feed him to the pigs.
