Best math problem ever!

A hockey puck, mass 0.115kg, moving at 35 m/s, strikes an octopus thrown onto the ice by a fan. The octopus has a mass of 0.265 kg. The puck and octopus slide off together. Find the velocity.

Are we assuming the octopus and puck meet head on, or does the puck strike the octopus at an angle ?

I make it 10.6 m/s

It's been a while and I'm not very awake.

Assumes direct hit and all energy remains (e.g. not a squishy octopus)

Nothing to do with energy, it's conservation of momentum that you need to consider. Assuming that the puck strikes the octopus through the centre of mass.

(Mp * Vp1) + (Mo * Vo1) = (Mp + Mo) * V2

V2 = ((.115 * 35) + (.265 * 0))/(.115 + .265)
V2 = 10.592 m/s

Energy is only conserved when there is a co-efficient of restitution of 1, in this example it is 0.

Me forget words - I was referring to the co-efficient of restitution but forgot to say for momentum: I just assumed. :o)

Do I lose marks for showing no working even though I got the answer correct?

Your answer was not given to a set of decimal places consistent with the values provided, so no.

Oi .. who changed my thread title? Are you allowed to do that? Isn't there some clause in the sign up somewhere that stops you from tampering with my personal flavour of your mother tongue.
