Can't get at it at work, so can someone tell me if they took out the references to the church or not in the end?

Yup, completely sanitised and removed.

Looks good though but TT you are so easily impressed by a little CGI wizardy aren't ya :)

The alt-Oxford and Alt-London bits look absolutely stunning though.

That looked damn good to me.

I've not actually read the books (folks telling me the third one is crap has been putting me off) but I'm certainly intreagued having seen the trailer.

And my goodness Nicole Kidman looked gorgeous, in a classic 1940s film star kind of way.

The version of London was pretty impressive, looked very real.

Yup would agree on Kidman. Makes a nice change to see her looking alright.

Could actually be a case of the film knocking the books for six (wouldn't be hard, only the first one was any good IMHO).

The bear looks shite though. As do the other animals.

Was too put off by the writing to enjoy the books but the film should be all right.

I'm mainly excited about the fact that the book has massive potential and they don't appear to have screwed any of it up yet.

Plus the parallel Oxford looks so awesome.

Wonder if it will end up like the Chronicles of Narnia film. The CGI animals remind me of it.

But how will they get around certain bits of the 3rd book? And most of the underlying plot loses relevance if you can't refer to the Bible... I guess they'll just change it all and make it an 'action-adventure'.

Oh and Harry, I can see why you wouldn't like the third book ;) Not that I do either like, Peej is right in saying only the first book is any good.

I really enjoyed reading through the books, but I just can't see how the big screen version can work without the religious stuff. It's the under-pinning theme to the whole series and really the third book makes no sense without it.

I am sure you can subsitute in some kind of 'uber baddy' but the problem with that idea is that it looses a lot of what the book has to say.

Will still go see it though, Miss Kidman made sure of that.

/takes screengrab of Rutty agreeing with him and preserves it for all prosperity.

What I'm rather looking forward to is when this place realise what happens in The Subtle Knife and the insinuation that the University's future captains of industry and science are a bunch of barbaric animal-molesting psychopaths :)

Should be an interesting fireworkds display methinks :)

The first book set about creating a fantastic alt-world, populated with characters that made you want to find out more. Then the stupid sod went and completely trashed that in the 2nd and 3rd books just to make some half-arsed statement about religious zealots.

It looks spot on to me, looking forward to it lots, and i loved the books, yes, all of them!

Don't see how it'll work with the religion stuff gone though, hmmm.

Sam Elliott as Scoresby - fucking BRILLIANT casting choice IMHO.

Ha! It's not that uncommon Peej :) I'm just more likely to actually be bothered to say when I don't agree than when I do.

It's well worth reading - though the third for me (and lots of others) is a bit of a let-down.

You'll have to stomach some anti-Church ranting of Dawkins-esque subtlety, though :-)

I completely agree, in fact I said the same over at, you know, the other place.

It's pretty much as I pictured him while reading it (unlike say, Asriel, who looked nothing like James Bond in my mind...though I also think Daniel Craig is good casting)

S'funny though - I think when you know a book's going to be filmed, you make up a mental cast in your head of who you'd see in the roles.

Lyra looks...wrong. Imagined her being a real scruffy tomboy.

Kidman - wrong again. Always imagined Miranda Richardson in the role.

Asriel - Again wrong - Had him down as the guy who plays Malfoy's dad in the Harry Potter films.

Scoresby though - bloody inspired bit of casting.

Hmmn; pretty good, although I'm not sure where all the art-deco tech came from. We don't see much of the daemons either...

I wouldn't be surprised if they have no plans to make the trilogy; the first book is (as others have mentioned) quite excellent and will stand by itself, albeit with an 'open' ending. The only possible reason to make the other two is money.

They've done a few bits of preliminary filming for one of 'em in Oxford recently so I'd assume it might be the second one (as I don't recall Oxford being in the third one much).

Chances are it's another three contract back to back job for the major players involved so it's probably already been financed etc.

That wouldn't bother me. Spent more of my life being an atheist than a Christian.

What would bother me more was getting to the third book and just finding it a shit read.

To be fair, The Amber Spyglass really does seem to divide opinion. And, even though it was my least favourite, there's some beautiful stuff in there.

I just checked out an old EG thread from a few years ago in which there was some debate about it, and now I want to re-read the whole lot and see if my views have changed.

Why exactly would they be making the first one if not for money?

Well okay; I'm sure the studio are planning on making (lots of) money but you'd hope those actually making the film have higher goals. You might as well ask why people paint pictures, write novels or create videogames...
