Paranorman

Quite a bit scarier than I was expecting (for kids I mean) so it meant we had to bail about 20 mins in. Watched it later myself and thought it was pretty good.

Think there was definitely some arse obsession going on throughout though!

It's nowhere near that bad!

Watched Catfish last night. Think I might delete my Facebook profile now. Really was a strangely gripping film/documentary.

Haha you're right I guess, I just found it a completely pointless film, and really was only watching it out of curiosity more than anything. The actors were all quite wooden on delivery though, and the most fascinating thing of all was Beckinsale's pout! She's had a bit of work done I think, she looked fairly unrecognisable to her other work!

Resident Evil: Retribution

How? HOW!? How is this shit still getting made? By far the worst of the series. Anderson continues to demonstrate that Event Horizon remains the biggest fluke in cinema history.

This cracker, no talent, fucktard is now so lazy that he simply lifts bad scenes from the games, cuts and pastes Uwe Boll's rejected slops together without any suggestion of narrative coherence, and runs through a checklist of characters that we (mostly) just about recognise. It's like watching hired lookalikes improvise for ninety minutes.

If you thought Capcom didn't have a clue what to do with Resi and Leon (et al), then watch this. It makes Resi 6 feel like Citizen Kane.

hah, gave up on it after the sequel. Silent Hill fared better as gaming film fare.

Speaking of which, watched an imported copy of Wreck-It Ralph over the weekend. Pretty disappointed with most of it, the best bits seemed to appear in the trailer but two things made me laugh out loud

1) The ! bit (probably because that's the noise on my phone's alert setting)
2) The animation on the folk in Happyland.

It so needs a sequel but not sure how they're going to manage it. Oh and Vannelope Von Schweetz is now my daughter's favourite Disney character of all time.

"Lying to a child...!!!" - Best line in the whole film, nearly made me choke on my cuppa.

Super 8

My gosh that is a good film. Mainly the human element. The alien is a bit naff.

Room 237.

I think this defies a score about as much as it (frequently) defies logic. It's a documentary on Kubrick's The Shining, and it purports to not only discuss the symbolism of the film - which would have been plenty, thanks - but also makes some fairly wild/interesting claims about what the film is actually about - and how Kubrick intended it to be watched.

The problem is, some of the theories are so ridiculous that it pisses on the more interesting stuff. That, and the theorists are so absolutely full of their own self worth that it cripples your desire to listen to anything they ultimately have to say. I've always been mesmerised by the film, but many of the statements these muppets come out with are ridiculous, and there's a mocking tone to it that really feels like it's talking down to the audience; an element of "I can't believe everyone didn't spot this."

Maybe if I'd smoked what you had, I might have realised that the poster of the man on skis, going down a snowy mountain and holding a ski-pole, was actually a minotaur too. Hmmm. And as for the revelation that you can see Kubrick's face super-imposed on the clouds in the opening shot(they even pause the movie but don't, unhelpfully, point out the area of sky I'm supposed to be squinting at), yeah... I think you're full of shit on this one, too.

Frustrating, full of itself, but occasionally intriguing.

I watched The Shining for the first time last year and have seen it only once, but the experience of watching it still sticks with me and while I don't remember it fully, on gut feeling I can say it's one of the best films I've seen.

I saw some hubbub about Room 237 on Metacritic and figured I ought to watch it (I love super-analysis) and yet I wonder if it would ruin my memories of the film, or worse, distort the way I see it.

The Hunger Games

Surprisingly decent 'tweenager' film. I was expecting a gore-free version of Battle Royale, but this story and character development was much deeper, and made the film better for it. I know there are more books in the series, but not sure we'll see another film...?

Another two films in the pipeline, 2nd being filmed at the moment.
It's not bad, but prefer Battle Royale meself.

Makes sense - I'd definitely watch the sequels..

Definitely agree - I guess on paper I'd expected them to be similar beasts, but in reality they're quite different films.

Ant-Man

I was blown away- completely not what I was expecting from one of Marvel's second tier heroes who's been left out somewhat from the Marvel Universe to this point (heck, he didn't even invent Ultron in the films).

It might be a 12A (I counted about 4 shits for what its worth) but it's definitely the most family friendly super hero movie I've seen, the violence is restricted to the big set piece against Yellow Jacket at the end but the film doesn't suffer for it. And it's laugh out loud funny in more places than most modern comedies but it still fits in with the Marvel Universe well, as the raid on an Avengers depot highlights.

Edgar Wright may have walked but you can see his touch all over the film, especially in the scenes where Lang's prison buddy is retelling how he got tip offs. Pure class.

Absolutely loved it. If you found Age of Ultron a turn off, you should love this one.

Can you tell it's "Scraping the barrel of Netflix" time?

Just bad. One or two nice effects (and Karl Urban just about saves it from being unwatchable, basically just channelling Dredd but not Dredd). Laughable attempt at the end to recreate the FPS perspective of the game tho.
