Last night I was defrosting the freezer compartment in the fridge with a big knife when it sprung a hissing leak! I managed to breathe in some of whatever it was coming out (CFCs?), anyone know whether I can expect to keel over soon?

I rang NHS direct and they were helpful as ever, apparently I'll be fine, but I should have gone to A&E to check it out anyway. I thought they said I was fine?

Now I keep thinking I'm short of breath but am pretty sure it's psychosomatic as I'm actually paying attention to my breathing for the first time. My throat also feels a little odd, not sore or anything, just odd, but again might be unrelated.

How old is the fridge?

if it's relatively new, then the gases aren't nice but they won't kill you.

If it's more than 5 years old though, it could well be something far worse. Definitely get shot of it, or at least get an engineer in.

A little bit of Freon-14 never hurt no-one.

Not sure how old the fridge is as it's the landlord's, but I'm guessing pretty old...

Tiger, are you being frivolous or not, I can't tell?!

Put least favourite cat in fridge overnight, see what happens, if not dead you're probably ok. Just like canaries in the mine.

Its not like I said to use your favourite, now that would have been out of order.

You'll be fine. Inhalation can cause "Cardiac arrhythmia. Confusion. Drowsiness. Unconsciousness.", contact with the liquid form will cause frostbite and the gas is irritant to the eyes.

If you haven't suffered from any drowsiness then we can assume you've had a small dose.

That's good to hear. Well, I did feel extra-tired last night (and this morning) but then I'm always tired so...

Haven't been this freaked out in a long time though.

Don't worry about it Rutty. If it had done any real damage you'd be suffering by now. Chances are the shortness of breath may be a slight feeling of anxiety due to worrying about your health and an odd-feeling throat that maybe feels tight or something can also be down to worry. It sounds daft, but you'd be amazed at how easily you can talk yourself into feeling that way sometimes!
