Does anyone have any suggestions on ways in which I can stop spammers from registering? Are these accounts generally automatically setup by 'bots' or do people take the time to manually fill out the forms?

It's frustating when most of the recent registrants are fucking spammers.

LOL!!

Rich, dunno if it might work but you can do one of those "random string of characters" type things that a lot of blogsites etc use.

Basically, set up an array with 20 or so of these random strings in, get the punter to type the string in as confirmation of registration - et voila.

Seems to deter spambots and numpties on most blogging sites so it might work here.

Yeah I'd already considered those but wondered if there was something else I'd missed that might do the trick. I suppose I could ask new users to verify their account details via email as right now you don't have to and a lot of the spammers email addresses are invalid, so that would probably work to some extent.

What about the "Cake or Kittens" type verification where you show 6 pictures, 4 of cake and 2 of kittens and you have to choose the kittens to confirm you're not a bot?

Or just ask what a picture is. Get 20 or so pictures, all dead obvious, and they've got name it.

And if you don't know the answer then you shouldn't be registering anyway!

Things like:

Apple
Ball
Kitten
The Bolivian Navy on manoeuvres in the South Pacific (yeah, I had to google that quote!)

Edit: you could even do it gaming related.

Mario
Sonic
Lara
Master Chief
Samus

Etc etc.

The email verification would probably help but it's not 100% of course. Nothing is I think.

When I come across a site that I don't expect to use more than once but requires email notification, I go here.

You've also got 24 hour ban on thread creation, and/or post X amount of times before thread creation.

It's more to stop them from registering spammer accounts than actually spamming the forum. As far as I know of, we've not actually had any spammer threads created on the forum. It's just that if you click the link to some of the newer users' profiles, the spammer post porn links in their alias fields.

People are paid for this though now aren't they? Not much mind, but some brainless moron will be at the end of a computer when registering, so any sort of picture based scheme or whatever won't stop them.

Neither will email verification, because they'll have about 1000 hotmail accounts.

Preventing thread creation until a certain number of posts might help, however, if I was a paid spammer I'd just spam a random thread 10 times then create my spam thread.

In all honesty I don't think there is a solution, bar charging for registrations. Even if it were something like 25p, that'd put them off (because I doubt they make more than 25p per spam attack). However, it'd probably put off geniune users also.

throw the baby out with the bath water and do a php strip_tags() on the field that's being used for holding the unwanted links before writing it to the database...

Actually that's a good point and one which I thought I'd already implemented, but obviously not!

That'll stop 90% of the under 16s registering then.

You should make York manually review each and every registration.

I notice that only one of the last five new members is 100% definitely a spammer. But if we are getting genuine newbies about, they're not posting much. :(

How 'bout autodeleting accounts if they don't post within a week of joining?

I dunno, I lurked for a couple of weeks at least when I joined new forums back in the day. I'm more eager to post these days, though.

:o) It's not going to stop many spambots is it - most of them would start posting immediately.

How about you can't post for a week and if you don't post within a week of that it gets deleted? This may limit the number of people that join significantly.

Edit: I can really make them look like clown noses here York, just for you.
