Its national Help A Lazy Forumer Out day, so I'm not going to go looking for reviews, cos to be honest, I'm not that worried.

Is this any good? If a few things work out I might pick up a Wii and next Friday (199 in Game). Is it like one of those Virtual Golf games you see on the PS2 but decent?

It'll probably be one of about the only 4 games I ever buy though.

From what I've heard it's reasonably fun but Pangya Golf (I think it's called that, something like that) is meant to be better and a bit more like Everybody's Golf (which is teh aw5s0m3!!!1!11!).

Use metacritic, it'll give you an idea of scores and a summary paragraph from each review they've archived.

Not played it myself Furbs, but there is a big thread here on EG.

General consensus seems to be that if you take your time to get used to the controls then it is a great game. Some people do mention that chipping and long puts can be a bit fiddly though.

You may be better waiting for the 2008 version as they are completely rewriting the wii-mote swing system.

@km Yeah I could do that, but to be honest, I really dont trust journo's Nintendo reviews. :)

Much rather hear from my peers, especially those who arent really Nintendo fans/"zomg Wiiwand is the best thing ever" types.

I cant/dont do cute graphics so Pangya Golf is out for me.

Ah thanks for the link Sill...I was thinking about hunting for it on EG, but I can well imagine how that thread will go...didnt know about 08 though. Might just have to go for WiiPlay instead in that case.

Just realised you need not bother trawling through that thread. Dougs was the man the constructive critique of the game and his AATG review is here!

Fantastic...it was actually Dougs I had in mind when I made the thread. Thanks again Sill, for joining in this special national lazy day.

Yeah...where the hell did that come from? The pace for the first one was brilliant and the second was a great finish.

Hope he proves me wrong and isnt totally shit.

Keep in mind that the 2008 version is round the corner I believe. Sounds much improved.

Wasn't deem praising this every chance he got? That probably means it's pretty good (if you want to play golf).

I've played it briefly round at a mate's house, and I enjoyed it. The swing machanic was similar to Wii Golf, but there's (obviously) a better choice of courses and players.
If it wasn't for the fact that the 08 version is due at the end of Aug (I think) I would pick it up now.

2008 version of Tiger Woods apparently fixes the knackered putting (in that sometimes it really used to wander off and be twitchy about putting or low power shots when fairway shots were fine).

Great game though - haven't played it nearly enough but it's absolutely stuffed to the gills with features and extras so if you have the chance to pick it up cheaply, I'd recommend it.

This is pretty much welded into my Wii. It took a few hours of practice to find out what worked best with the swing mechanics, but my scoring average is now around 60.

The problems are more of an annoyance really, but as has been mentioned, the putting is possibly the biggest one. I find that once you get around 40 feet from the hole, it's almost impossible to put enough pace into the stroke to sink it.

The other thing that annoys me is during the tournaments. Say you score 62 in the first round, and the nearest opponent is on 67. The following rounds will see previous hackers become gods of the game and start shooting 58's to catch up. This means that despite the course getting more difficult as the event progresses, you have to shoot very low scores to maintain a winning position.

I play golf for real (to a not an exactly great standard, admittedly), so I would have been most disappointed if playing this didn't feel something like reality. It isn't, of course. But when you pull off a nice shot, you certainly feel like it was 'you' who hit it. Very satisfying indeed.

One thing I found that worked quite nicely - attaching a bit of bamboo to the Wiimote, with a bit of weight on the end. Don't laugh - it really does help with the power thing, particularly if you play golf or putt regularly.

The best tip I would offer is to hold your hands (or the Wii remote to be more exact) flatter than you would possibly think. It helps to keep the remote steady and avoids the twisting that is inevitable from pointing it straight downwards.

When friends have tried to play and slice the ball heavily, they usually are aiming the remote too sharply at the ground.

It's more like holding a proper club than you might think (at least to me it is - maybe that's why I can't get my handicap down...)

Not sure 2008 adds much to be honest. They're working on the putting, but seems the rest of the swing mechanic will be left alone. And still no online play.

Did you play it in the end Furbs?

Hey, quit complaining! At least they're not just porting stuff across from OUR last generation!

No...

they're porting stuff across from their own NEXT generation!

Oh, man!

That reminds me: oi, Nintendo? The last generation ends when WE say it does.
