For stuff that doesn't (yet) warrant its own thread, or totally random crap.

First episode of Californication: as much residual Duchovny love as I still have from the X-Files, this was uncomfortable viewing at best. Tits and crude lines flying everywhere to make up for the fact that it's neither as funny nor as slick as they seemed to want it to be. Seemed like a really dull, bog-standard US family drama, but sexerized for cable TV.

Has Duchovny gone back to doing soft core porn then?

Mad Men looks like it could be a good one to watch:

"In the 1960s, Don Draper is the man in charge at one of the top advertising agencies in New York."

Complete cast of relative unknowns but the first episode is very good.

Pre air of the first two episodes of season 2 of Dexter is available in the usual places too. Looks at least as good as series one so far.

I have Mad Men ep 1 ready to watch, I could probably watch that tonight actually instead of wasting time on the world wide internet.

And yeah, at least four different pairs of tits (some nice ones, though, which is, er, nice) in the first ep of Duchovny's vehicle. One of which belongs to

Brotherhood is a pretty good one to try. The best I can do to describe it is The Sopranos without the humour.

I think probably the strangest entertainment media related decision I've made in the last few years is to never try watching an episode of The Sopranos, even when I used to watch a whole shit-load of TV.

I'm glad I didn't bother waste my time downloading Californication.

Another new summer show I saw over the weekend: Saving Grace, starring Holly Hunter as a bad policewoman who sleeps around, drinks on the job, etc. One night while driving home drunk she runs over and kills someone, and gets a visit from an angel who offers her another chance to sort her life out. Oh, and there's your typical "crime of the week" plot going on in the background that she has to solve. Yes, it really is an adult version of that crappy "Touched By An Angel" soap opera that keeps appearing on daytime TV, yes it really is as bad as it sounds, and no the presence of Holly Hunter isn't good enough to make it watchable.

Might as well link back to this thread, seing as it ended up talking about random pilots anyway. Still need to watch Damages and Big Bang Theory (another new geek comedy show? when did geeks suddenly become fashionable?)

Edit: Scratch Big Bang Theory off the list - it's shite, pure and simple. It does star the generic blonde one from 8 Simple Rules, so might appeal to some people, as long as you can sit through the pathetic excuse for "comedy" without wanting to drive a spike through your head to make the pain stop.

And finally saw Damages. Wasn't too bad, actually. Glenn Close plays evil lawyer (is there any other kind?), Ted Danson plays evil bad guy who sold his company moments before it crashed costing his employees their jobs and pensions, and some actress called Rose Byrne plays a noob lawyer who goes to work for Glenn Close despite having ties to the case.

The first episode is told half in flashback (when noob first gets employed by evil firm), half "6 months later" when it looks like things got very messy indeed. So far it feels exactly like a John Grisham TV mini-drama (I think the story will play out over all 13 episodes), so how much you'll like it depends on how much you like those types of stories. Unless the story starts getting really daft (which is quite likely), this one could be a keeper.

So it could be a Murder One style one-indepth-case approach? Sounds good.

Saw the first ep of "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" the other day - me and the missus really enjoyed it and are keenly looking forward to the next episode.

First episode was *very* well written, I thought the dialogue was great, Chandler-off-of-friends wasn't too "Chandler"-like and clicked well with the guy who plays his writing partner/co-star character.

Matt Perry does seem to become more Chandler-like as the series goes on until it nears the end.

Without having seen the thing, I can only assume that the director is some kind of miracle worker, as I've never seen Matt Perry play a character differently.

He's more of a subdued version of Chandler in it. The early episodes almost made me think he was capable of playing someone else. He isn't.

Well, I guess the operative word was "wasn't *too* Chandler-like"... but I've only seen the first episode and from the sounds of M_E's posts the "hey, I'm not really just Chandler-off-of-Friends, I have more range, honestly" routine quickly wears off ;-)

Watched Californication last night and I have a completely different opinion of it, I thought it was rather good and might work out pretty well. Duchovny plays a complete shit so damn well and I thought there was a decent level of humour in it too.

It reminded me of one of my old faves "Dream On" but without the flashbacks/daydreams and a little more drama.

There were some funny bits, but I just don't see where the narrative hook is.

Another new pilot doing the rounds is Chuck. Spy steals entire database of classified data, emails it to geek (the Chuck in question). Geek reads email, absorbs it subliminally, turns into super spy himself. Everyone now either wants to kill Chuck, or depend on him for their safety. Stars some unknown as Chuck, and Adam Baldwin (another nobody from Firefly) as the bloke trying to protect him. It's another dumb action show, but it's enjoyable all the same.

I just watched this, and definitely enjoyed it. Likeable lead, hot totty, solid supporting actors, pretty amusing and just cheesy enough for my liking.

I guess The Colbert Report is a given.

More4 should start putting this on straigt after The Daily Show as it is in America. Some of the brief exchanges as the programs cross over are funnier than most UK comedies ever dream of being.

New Flash Gordon TV show aired in the US on Friday, watched it Saturday, will probably get the next episode but unless it improves dramatically I probably won't bother past that.

Ming should not look like someone who's a member of Babylon 5's Earth Force is one of the lame aspects but there's plenty more....

Grabbing eps 2 & 3 of Flash... I was intrigued by the first one, though it might be shit.

The first two of Dexter series were interesting, the first one had me worried but the second started things picking up.

Loving heroes which I'm half way through.

Watched the first 2 eps last night & thought it was awful. I'm not sure what I was expecting - more Mongo, less Smallville probably. Unfortunately the missus liked it, so I'll be subjected to the rest of the series, along with Eureka. I hope the new Dexter comes to the rescue.

Hehe, yeah it was. It started off slowly and I remember thinking that it didn't seem as funny as I remembered previously but the slow first half was just setting us up for the fantastic second half.
