Got an upcoming interview with Radio 1 and in return as a bribery type thing I've asked Iain McKenzie if he'd do an interview with me for AATG.

So, any questions to ask a tech guru from Radio 1? Keep 'em relatively clean, or at least if they're dirty use bleeps :)

So, er, what does he actually do? (that's a question from me to the forum, not to him)

Basically, any of the tech stuff that Radio 1 covers - he's the main man. He covers most of their gaming stuff, and he was the guy who organised the day up at the Nintendo House / Radio 1 to have a go on the Wii and PS3 last year.

He's a decent chap and he's coming round to Maybe Towers to do an interview about the Wii one year on (poor sod) so it's going to be a bit of a laugh. I thought I'd interview him at the same time too so any quessies, chuck 'em up here.

As no one else has bothered to help you out, a quick two minute brain-dump of questions to get you started.

What does he think about the hardware failures of the XBOX 360?

Does he think Rockstars 'marketing techniques' could actually be having a very negative effect on the industry.

Does he subscribe to the 'anything less than ten hours is too short' school of gaming.

Does he think that the introduction of online gaming has resulted in some titles concentrating too much on that aspect of the game and not enough on the single-player campaign.

Does he think next-gen gaming is still affordable or is it starting to become an expensive hobby and should reflect the pricing of other forms of entertainment?

What advice could he give to those looking to get into the gaming industry as a journalist/reviewer/technology expert?

What does he think it will take for gaming to be accepted as an entertainment or even art medium on a par with cinema? When?

What's his opinion of people like Jack Thompson and the tabloid press's negative attitude towards gaming?

What does he think Apple's next major move in the portable music player market will be?

What does he think about the current costs of downloadable content? Does he think that downloadable content could influence some developers to leave certain parts of the game out in order to take more cash later on?

What does he think of the pricing structure of 'retro' games on the three next-gen formats?

Yeah, I got a question. This woodchuck. If it's not actually chucking fucking wood, why's it called a fucking woodchuck then, eh? What's the point of being called a woodchuck if you are, in general, going to not chuck wood to the extent that people actually create stupid tongue twisters about it? If anything it should be called a Doesn'tchuckanywoodatallasithappens. Or is it just that they live in wood and they're all called charlie? I dunno. Maybe this guy can shed some light on it.

What does he do again?

CAN HE FUCK UBISOFT FOR ME?

I'll tell you what the bugger does. He gets given a brand new Xbox 360 Elite. For nothing.

That's what he does. I think my first question is going to be "Who the hell do I have to hump to get you fired and take your job?"

Does he think there will be a winner out of HD DVD and Blu-Ray? Or does he think the market will be too divided for either format to achieve DVD levels of success?

How about on a more personal note.. How much does he game, what genres does he most enjoy playing and what have been his most recent gaming highlights?

Having listened to a fair few of the reports that he has worked on,

does it bother him having to dumb it down quite so much? They tend to play up to public view, thinking specifically about the PS3 here where the general impressions the BBC was giving (across all formats not just on the radio1 broadcasts) was that it was a year advanced on the 360, and kind of glossed over the, it was actually just heavily delayed in europe idea.

oh and what did he do before being the tech guy on R1?

i think the "dumbing down" thing is a fair comment, the way some of the stuff was presented last year for the Wii thing made us sound like a bunch of drunken lads on a stag night :)

I suspect the angle he's going for with the interview tonight is "Is the Wii now shit? Is the PS3 a lost cause? Is the 360 great but about as reliable as a uzbekistanian spin dryer and about as noisy?"

Hoping to give a relatively balanced view but it's going to be very difficult not to come down in favour of the 360, despite its hardware issues.

Which is a very interesting point, a lot of people i speak to have this view (many of them owning both consoles). it's interesting that even with such hardware crappiness the 360 seems to be edging opinion polls

just to clarify i am not making a sweeping statement here, I am talking purely about the poeple i speak to regularly.

I think stealing a march on the other two platforms helped a bucketload. It meant that most projects have led on 360 and either been converted to PS3, or...well, just not converted at all to Wii..

I keep blowing hot and cold about the Wii. The potential is still there, and if you live in Japan (or possibly the US) the Wii is a much sounder investment because it's well supported in both territories. Here again though, we're getting shafted and it's looking like meagre pickings on the run up to chrimbo.

I was amazed this weekend that two of my friends, absolute die-hard PS2 owners who I felt sure would go to PS3, both bought 360s on the same day. The reliability issue didn't bother them due to the new 3 year warranty, and waiting almost 2 years has given them a great catalogue of games to buy. They were also much more tempted by the 360 exclusives than the PS3 ones, starting with Bioshock.

I think if you buy a 360 in the right place, and keep your receipt, things become a lot easier - dealing with MS and their repairs dept has soured a lot of people to the experience and having a reconditioned machine sent out as a replacement for their borked machine hasn't really helped (bloody stupid really when it's probably cost MS as much in courier fees and investigative repair work as it would've done to just give people a brand new machine) probably hasn't helped much either

Which consoles does he own?
Which would he buy if he had to spend his own money? (this being based on the fact he might be given them all as tools of his job).

What is he playing right now?
Why does the BBC have such a hard-on for stories related to Second Life?
Has he touched Johnny Minkley?

I have, but only to barge him out of the way for standing in the middle of the only entrance / exit to the Wii Launch Event room, talking absolute bollocks to a couple of industry "stunners"

S'alright, I washed straight afterwards.

Does he think that it's possible to do a decent mainstream tv/radio show on gaming or is it best left to podcasts and websites?

Seriously nice bloke, came all the way up to Gloucester to get some soundbites from me for a Radio 1 PS3 special, then I had to explain that Gloucester is a wee bit 'shite' for shopping...

My question would be: Do publishers and developers ever treat him with contempt or alternatively treat him with additional respect, purely based on being part of a Radio network rather than the specialist press?

Yup decent bloke, just did my soundbites. Hopefully I didn't come across as too scathing about the Wii but I think the bloke's eyes just about popped out when he saw the room...
