I like vaguely generic threads :o)

Goldeneye is on ITV1 and yet all it makes me want to do is watch Casino Royale, a far, far better film. The influence of the Bourne films is welcome and has added something the films were missing for me. Up until CR they all seem to be the same film with different people in.

..and of course women with stupid names. It, along with the gadgets, didn't add charm to the films they just got annoying: "lets see how the brand new gadget he has just been given will save the world" or how the previously nice woman is actually evil.

At least they improved upon the stupid Roger Moore "jokes". I hate those films about as much as the Timothy Dalton ones (although he wasn't a bad Bond).

The Bonds had become ridiculous overblown cartoon pastiche's of themselves. I totally agree. Watching any of the Brosnan bonds, each one clearly thinking the only way they could go was even more ludicrous gadgets and even more overblown set pieces, just reminds you of what an utter triumph Casino Royale was. Its my favourite bond film of all time I reckon. Certainly the best since connery. I still have a soft spot for the ludicrously camp Moore films though, since those were the ones I grew up with.

News in the middle of films FTL...

Goldeneye did a decent job of reviving the franchise but it looks so old now.

Casino Royale is my favourite too (where I watched it helps - on holiday) but the others don't do enough for me. Maybe it's because most of the rest are so familiar due to endless reruns, not my style or just piss poor (invisible car...).

Halle Berry in the swimsuit was nice.

Casino Royale is very possibly top dog... I'm no Connery fan, which mars many of the best efforts for me, but there's usually something to like about almost all of them.

Using Casino Royale to go back towards the utter bastard James should always have been was a master stroke for reinvigorating the films.

Everyone rants on about the Bourne films influence but misses the point that the content was always there in Flemming's books.

Fully agree. In the books Bond was a mysogenist bastard with absolutely no morals. Personally I think Craig is possibly the closest Bond to how Fleming intended behaviour-wise. Before CR I would have said Dalton in License To Kill was the closest.

Pfff no love for Lazenby again. Despite the slightly soppy ending, OHMSS was a kick ass Bond film. Bond wading in there smacking people about, shagging a lot of women, and basically doing more with his fists than with his gadgets.

I personally reckon the series could've done without Moore and Brosnan.

I think the biggest influence of the Bourne films was showing the producers that they could follow the source material more closely and it having a strong chance of being successful.

The Roger Moore films were, on the whole, terrible and Brosnan was good enough to revive Bond at the time but seeing it now...his acting style is annoying and you can see he isn't that good an actor compared to Craig.

This.

The pace and grittiness of the whole film was lost in that fucking tedious card game.

Quantum looks like its got too much CGI and too much silly bond stuff (helicopters, planes, etc), just after we got a more realistic bond in CR.

Still, all I'll be paying for is the carpark, so I can't complain :)

Would you rather of had some sort of 2-player missile command game where the loser gets zapped?

That's what I thought. The glass-roof scene is what stands out for me, and the trailer is full of similarly silly stunts/scenes. At least CR was a bit more restrained in that respect, although as others have said the pacing was a bit off.

Will give this a go but trailers are hardly filling me with hope that it will be better than Bourne.

Goldeneye was the best of the 'recent' Bond films in my opinion.

I was lucky enough to attend the cast and crew screening of this on Saturday (and accidently wangled my way into the reserved seating at that).

The pre credit car chase was okay but really set the scene for the rest of the movie- action action action, often for no good reason.

I know some of you didn't like Casino Royale because there was too much card playing/not enough action but at it's heart Bond should be about spying IMHO and that's where this film falls down.

In an attempt to up the ante over CR, the action is pretty relentless, and this is at the cost of two things: character development and actual spy stuff.

Bond in CR did the tortured killer bit pretty well but sadly Craig isn't given the chance here. Spotting the mechanics the film runs by is pretty simple: Bond gets a name, hunts the person down and kills them. He either gets a name out of the victim, knicks their luggage or whatever and then does exactly the same to another person until the finale.

It's relentless in the same way the last Bourne film was and therefore not as good as its predecessor in the same way the final Bourne film wasn't.

There were a couple of great scenes that will stick though, the fight at the Opera with Tosca blaring out was brilliantly done and the Mr White stuff was very good.

Overall a 6/10. It was enjoyable but disappointing at the same time.

Reading between the lines of an interview with Craig recently - sounded like he'd already had enough of Bond. He likes the kudos that goes with the role but sees Bond (the new bond at least) as a bit of a meathead.

Ah well, no doubt I'll watch this at some stage because even at its worst, the Bond series is a guilty pleasure.

Yeah, I went with my father in law who got the tickets. He's a big Bond fan and was quite deflated afterwards. I think the problem was CR promised much, a return to the early Bonds, very little gadgetry, some actual spying and a hero who isn't indestructible. Quantum has the opportunity to build on that as it picks up where CR left off but it doesn't, it heads down the road of bombast and bigger set pieces, which is a shame.

I think the problem is the films daren't go too nuts with the gadgets because people get pissed off. Daren't go nuts with the action because people will call it a dumb action flick. Daren't go nuts with examining Bond's psyche because people will say it over-analyses stuff. Tough call but I reckon since Babs Brocolli and her cousin took over, it's been a downhill slide towards pandering to the American taste for dumb action flicks.

I'd give the new film 8/10, but only because I'm not marking it down too harshly for not feeling like a Bond film. Great action film, Craig is superb in the role, but there's just nothing to hang it all on.

I thought the new film was rubbish.

The action sequences were great but the plot 'holding it all together' was useless and as I can't remember much of what happened in CR I had absolutely no idea what was going on half the time.

I've enjoyed reading the reviews and opinions on this one, as if at some point in time the Bond films ever had a plot that was relevant, important, or didn't contain some kind of deus ex machina (usually provided by Q branch) ending. From Dr. No's metal hands onwards, they've always been like this.

Having said that Die Another Day took it to a whole other level, so in the face of that I can see how Casino Royale sparked at least some critical interest.
