Dragging this thread kicking and screaming back from the brink of obscurity, I got my cheapo copy of James Bond: Bloodstone through the post yesterday and I'm quite pleasantly surprised at how much better than Quantum of Solace it is (yeah alright, that's not exactly saying much).

It all kicks off very much like a Bond movie - with a pre-credit action sequence that serves as the game's tutorial.

The gun bits and cover dynamic are absolutely fantastic. A great mix of realistic action and ducking for cover, with a bit of stealth thrown in for good measure that made the game feel a lot like Arkham Asylum (with a lot more gunplay obviously).

Driving bits were OK, as you'd expect from Bizarre Creations - but the driving sequences so far have been fairly short and all feel like they're playing out in a tiny cardboard town with limited scope for tearing through the streets and finding your own route between objectives.

Graphics are serviceable. Some pretty naff character models (Judi Dench looks like a female Davros, poor love - and Daniel Craig looks like he's been given a good going over with a steak hammer - and I'm pretty sure Joss Stone's arse isn't Kardashian-sized)

All in all, it's surprising it didn't do better than it did - but it had next to zero hype, and released in one of the worst release schedules to put a game like this out in (anywhere near the release of COD is a bad idea for any game let alone something that's in essence very similar).

Not the greatest Bond game ever but certainly a lot better than I thought it would be and a bargain for under £15

So the new film is back on track and Rachael Weiss is in it. I got the Mummy on blu ray over Christmas purely to lust after her in high def. Yummy.

Definitely fancy her, she's very cute in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. The woman they replaced her with in the 3rd film was weird and annoying (mind you, the third film was pretty much an unmitigated disaster from start to finish anyway)

But it did at least produce the only reasonable joke in the film, when she's doing the book signing - "it's like you're a completely different woman". The rest of it was terrible, and I thought the second one was poor too. Too many re-treads from the first film, like the wall of water (wall of sand in the first one) and the sequence during the fight when they can't read the hyroglyphs.

Back to topic. Finished off Bloodstone at the weekend (I'm really not that good at games, but I seem to have got through this in well under 6 hours flat).

For all the nice bits in it, it's achingly obvious that Activision should dump the Bond license as soon as possible because they clearly don't seem to know what to do with it.

I'll do a full write-up for the front page if anyone's interested in reading it...

That joke pretty much summed up the whole film - as if the whole thing was a great big in-joke, some sort of parody of the first two films. The comic element was played up too much, so there was absolutely no tension as a result.

I honestly rank The Mummy as one of my favourite films - perfect popcorn fodder, and never gets dull no matter how many times I watch it. The 2nd was considerably worse but still good fun. I watched the 3rd over Christmas with my expectations low, but it genuinely was incredibly dull, which is the worst thing you can say about an 'action-adventure' film. Rewatched the latest Indy the following week, and that has plenty of flaws but it was still much more interesting and enjoyable.

Okay, hijack over... funnily enough, Quantum of Solace remains the only Bond film I haven't seen.

Quantum of Solace was (just like the game) completely unremarkable in every way. Even the psychotic super-villain was just a pantomime baddie compared to the sort of Bond villain you'd see in the best Bond flicks.

Am getting a bit fed up of the Craig bond films just feeling like one huge long product placement exercise.

Nothing will ever beat the "Rolex ?", "No, Omega" moment in Casino Royale for crass placement. He might as well have done the John Candy "I do have...a Casio" bit from 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles' and draped it over his arm to show it off.

Hmmm seems Activision aren't done raping the corpse of the Bond license just yet. They're doing a 'Bond Legends' series, basing a stack of games on classic Bond films. First up is Moonraker (with Daniel Craig taking the role of Bond) with On Her Majesty's Secret Service to follow.

Grief!

Waiting for my production t shirt to turn up- Father in law knows people working on the new film at quite a senior level. Should be enough to get us into the cast & crew screening :)

Last time, I sat next to Desmond Llewellyns body double. They still invite him along because of his long association with Bond.

Bill. I hold my hands up. You are the biggest and most-skilled blagger I've ever come across.

:D

That's meant as a compliment, by the way, and not a criticism.

This one has zero input from me and is entirely down to my awesome father in law ;)

TBH I'm terrible at blagging- I don't think I've ever actively tried to get something out of anyone. Except a Touchpad out of HP, and that was the week before they dropped the price to £99 and i failed. I just get offered stuff. Eventually someone will realise how daft it all is and stop giving me free stuff but until then, I'm awaiting the free combine harvester for me to make hay with :)

It's Activision. They've been making a worse job of doing the Bond license justice than even EA managed.

Who cares about the game? The movie itself is great, apparently. Looking forward to it, though I want to watch QoS first.

:) Had something similar at the last Batman premiere. Plus, the staff stood at the ends of the rows watching us with night-vision gear.

Which seemed oddly in-keeping with the theme of the night.

It's the new 'anti dickhead' procedure. Some people just can't help themselves so it's to protect the rest of us from spoilerising idiots. They didn't tell you that you're getting your mind wiped at the end of the screening too :)

Is the UK press under embargo on 007 Legends reviews until release, even though the US reviews are out? It's cool, Acti, we know it's duff.

I'm sure we're all surprised it's rubbish aren't we?

I'm absolutely flabbergasted :)

(That said, I did rather like Bloodstone. Apart from the Joss Stone bits).

I reckon the biggest problem with the use of the Bond license is that all developers who have a crack at it seemed obsessed with making a fps that is better than N64 Goldeneye.

It seems obvious to me that a 3rd person action game in the mould of the Uncharted series would be an ideal vehicle for a Bond game. Loads of set piece action levels and bit of minor detective work to break up the pace of the game. You could even throw in a vehicle section for good measure, but less jungle bits than you find in Uncharted (unless of course the game stars Roger Moore in one of his patented flared safari suits!)

You, sir, have hit the nail on the head. The weird obsession with Goldeneye (Sorry Neko) means that all reviewers seem doomed to make endless comparisons between whatever the latest bond game is - and Goldeneye. And also seems to drive developers down the road of ensuring that you'll get a multiplayer arena-shooter experience where you can shoot the tits off Scaramanga with the golden gun, but will end up with a single player experience that is poorly scripted, horribly rendered and completely lacking in thrills.

There's so much massive untapped potential in the licence (I thought EA were on the right track of doing Bond stuff based on the old movies - playing through a game that had all that 60s spy kitsch would be so very cool) but it seems Acti really just want to keep making the same dull old game again and again.

The licence must be costing them a shitload as well, and they're pissing it away.

Actually what I would really like to see is a Lego James Bond game, but that will never happen unless Warner Brothers get their hands on the license.

Hmmm unlikely (and I'm not big on the lego games but I bet that would be more entertaining than Quantum of Solace was :)

The Alpha Protocol approach would be awesome for a Bond game. A proper intelligent game that had an original plot and that type of branching development of the story complimented by some blistering gunplay and / or chase sequences.
