The announcement is tomorrow but if they make this with a big hard drive (preferably solid state but still reasonably priced) then I'll be very happy.

I just cannot see why anyone would want an MP3 player that required you to take it out of the pocket and look at it to do anything with it.

I can see the appeal for watching videos but remain very far from convinced that anything but a tiny minority see this capability as anything more than a curio.

Saw someone called a "gadget guru" on TV earlier this morning. Apparently rumour has it it'll be touch screen like the iphone and it will have wifi. Doesn't seem too unlikely.

So when's the announcement then?
Sometime in the US morning? Evening?

Superb news! Now I don't need an iPhone!

I've had at least 1 of every generation of iPod, and I can without doubt say that I have not once attempted to change tracks or do anything with any of them, whilst still in my pocket.

I can understand what you are saying, I just don't think it actually matters.

I agree that for 99% of situations - home, office etc. it's not an issue at all. I can understand it on the tube or walking down the street but it's never been a problem for me.

I want the 2nd of October to get here fast now. Other than the capacity, the touch is exactly what I was hoping for in every way.

Hmm I have a savings account with some left over cash sloshing about after I recently transferred the sum in it to an ISA. I figured it'll come in handy at some point. I just checked it and won;t you believe it. 271 left in it.

Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it.

That is a weird coincidence. Do you think Steve Jobs might be spying on you?

Good Christ, why did they do that to it?! Also:

"The iPod nano is also expected to feature the first substantial improvements to the iPod's traditional interface. Rumored to have been in development for nearly two years, the click-wheel based interface will pack plenty of animation and other visual flair"

Is it just me who vastly prefers UIs to be as crap-free as possible?

edit: the new 'proper' iPod looks very nice, though. Still, I can't massively see the benefit of a touch screen.

A list interface with minimal effort and a high selection speed is essential. Pretty interfaces are fine for infrequent use but it's not a major selling point for me.

The touch screen is new and shiny and I'm bored of the clickwheel so I want.

As much as I hate to admit it, I'm sold on getting a 16GB Touch to replace my 20GB/4G...

Bugger. This will probably mean the prices of the old Nano will go up on ebay due to everyone wanting to buy the good looking one before they vanish :-(

Oh, I don't doubt that, I just don't see any massive practical benefit.

Although a new touch screen control system for the music part of the ipod may not be enough to make you upgrade, I think it will be an ace way of sharing your pictures with other people.
One of the frustrating things with digital cameras is that you can no longer take your holiday snaps over next time you visit your mom/dad/grannie/etc.
You put them on your computer and if you're not too computer literate that's where they'll stay.
If your relatives visit they may huddle behind your desk chair uncomfortably and look at a few over your shoulder.
If you're somewhat more tech savy you'll just stick them online and share them with your friends and such. But my 87 year old grannie isn't going to see her pictures of London that way is she?

You can just stick them on the ipod though. Hold it up. Landscape foto? Turn the ipod and the pic swaps to landscape. See the next one? Just drag your finger over the screen from right to left as if flicking through them. So easy and so elegant.
You can hand people your pictures again and flick through them just like you could 10 years ago when you used the old 35mm and got them printed.

Of course. I guess you can still get prints from your digital shots but where you took a film of 24 or 36 on holiday in the past, I now return with 100-200 shots after 2 weeks. I've not made a single print in the 2 (or is it 3?) years I've got a digital camera.

That is true. If I'm desperate for someone to see the photos though I either burn them to a DVD or take the camera and a video lead so we can look on the telly.

Also, our camera has quite a good screen size, so it's not bad for viewing anyway.

This may be of interest. It's just about every custom made app for the iPhone, many of which are rumoured to be likely to work on the Touch too.

Ooh very cool stuff. Anyone have any idea if it's likely that the next generation of iPhone's will have gps ?

There's already software for a huge number of phones and PDAs so I wouldn't be at all surprised to see it and Apple also seem to be getting closer to Google too.

Google Maps GPS?

Edit: Arsed up the link. It's good now.

I just squeeze my PS3 into my backpack. It's the photoviewer that provides the value.

It's a long shot but has anyone tried one of the iPod Classics yet? Any problems?

I cancelled my touch order - I decided I can't work with less capacity than I have now.

I tried one briefly in the store, seemed OK. New interface is quite nice and they're damn slim (especially compared to my 2G 10gb brick!). They do look a bit dated now compared to the touch though of course.

Oh and the nano is just as horrible in the flesh, yuck! Worst bit of Apple design in years.

Been thinking some more about the touch for the gf.
She has virtually no music on her laptop but plenty of video. So Ideally, I'd like to buy it, carefully take it out of the packaging, hook it up to my PC so I can load some music and pictures onto it, then put everything back in the box.

I hope that's going to be feasible. :-/

I have a Classic.

It's a bit slow and it sometimes skips the first track of an album (I'm using the old firmware though, so hopefully the latter issue has been sorted. The new firmware supposedly speeds things up a bit).

Battery life is very good. I drained the battery last week and it took over 30 hours. The battery indicator's a bit inaccurate though.

One other problem I found: after draining the battery, it managed to lose all its settings :-(

Ah good, no issues that I hadn't heard about o/ The touch is far prettier and I almost got one but 16 gigs isn't enough for me - I'll be constantly swapping songs around :o(

@Lostsoul - I believe the slowness is fixed on the newer firmware.

@Salaman - if it works like the other iPods then as long as autosynch isn't enabled then it should work fine.
