I can see myself doing it with Halo 3. Contrary to popular opinion, I do accept its a decent game, but it totally leaves me cold.

Thing is, on Friday when there were reports of places selling it early, I was well up for picking up a copy. Then I downloaded the Cinema Paradiso thing last night and was totally underwhelmed (I wont go into why as I dont want to make another Halo discussion thread!), and yet I just know that come Wednesday lunchtime, I'll get bored and give myself some retail therapy.

Anyone else ever picked up something which they're pretty certain they wouldnt like, just to see what all the fuss is about? And did you end up liking it?

I do find myself succumbing to a sense of "peer-pressure" when I see a whole bunch of people on my friends list playing the same game :-)
Doubly-so if it's a multplayer game, cos the guys at work generally keep up to date with the latest and will abandon whatever multiplayer game we've been caning in favour of the newer ones.

I picked up WoW pretty much entirely due to the buzz on the forums at the time. I'd barely played the RTS games so it wasn't because of the franchise, I just wanted something to play, was curious since I hadn't played an MMO before and was pretty sure I wouldn't last past the first free month.

Ended up playing it for ages.

I was exactly the same with Halo2. I somehow convinced myself I needed to buy it, played it for 30 minutes then promptly sold it and never played it again. And I can feel it happening again with Halo3, but I think my resolve is stronger this time around.

Besides that there're so many other games I want to play first - Stranglehold, (maybe)MOH:A, Fifa08, PES2008, Tiger Woods 2007, so I think I'll give it a miss.

Same as Furbs and Chump. I preordered a copy of Halo 3 knowing full well that it won't "do it for me" and knowing full well that on the day it arrives I will be off having a blissful wedding anniversary day out anyway so I won't even get to play it till later.

The multiplayer side of Halo has always puzzled me - why is it so revered (this could be because I just don't get deathmatch stuff though).

Single player the storyline is so hackneyed and derivative that I doubt that'll even keep me floated. I completed Halo 1 (amazingly), played about 2 hours of Halo 2 before giving it up as a hideously broken concept and really am only buying Halo 3 because I'm a hopeless completist for "sets" of games.

Other games I've bought purely because of the hype and been disappointed:

Oblivion - Didn't click with me at all.

Forza 2 - 10 out of 10 for the first couple of weeks, never been back to it since

Heavenly Sword - Really believed that there could be more to it than button mashing and visuals. There wasn't.

Whats worse for me is I'm fully aware its not peer driven. Halo fans are lower the JRPG fans to me :P, so they dont influence me in the slightest, its purely marketing driven :((

I would buy a set of those toy soldiers in a heart beat though. And probably enjoy them more.

Strangely I think I learnt early about hype with games (and most other things) which some really quite shitty C64 games back in the day :)

Nowadays the closest I get to buying because of hype is buying a game earlier than I otherwise would've because I know it has multiplayer and I enjoy playing with you lot.

Furbs - Plus one on the soldiers :)

Retroid - Oh gawd, you sound like me, taken in by the screenshots on the back of C64 tape cases. Sometimes they were dreadfully misrepresentative. God knows how no one got sued!

I used to buy into the hype that Zzap would create about certain games. Little Computer People f'r instance - didn't rate it at all. Similarly Ballblazer, never ever liked it.

Most of the time those boys were spot on though.

Whereas I loved LCP (disk version, cassette was shite and cut down) and Ballblazer is one of my all-time classics; but yeah, pretty much!

Got the C64 version of Op Wolf because of the Zzap review. Hated it. Bought Chase HQ & Wec Le Mans for C64, too; both hateful crap.

Worst for screenshots was when the ST & Amiga came out then almost ALL the box shots were from those!

Op Wolf was fantastic. No multiload o/

Also the first game I ever completed which is why its close to my heart. I dont think I ever got suckered into the 16bit pretending to be 8bit thing, although there were a few times with games like Chase HQ and Afterburner where I thought they'd just put Spectrum shots on the back of the C64 version by mistake :(

GTA: San Andreas. I've never really been massively into the GTA games, wasn't interested in this at all in the runup to release, and then suddenly on the day of launch, everyone was going crazy for it and I decided I just *had* to have a copy. Cue me wandering around town desperately trying to find one.

Played it for a few hours, kinda liked the driving and style of the thing, hated the character customisation and the on foot stuff, got bored, sold it. Tch.

To be fair I kinda had a similar experience with Halo 2, although it was more my own hype that made me want it, and I did get quite a lot of fun out of it eventually (in multiplayer, at least).

I'm another one who got suckered into the Halo + Gears hype traps. The Halo games didn't turn out too bad, but I'm bemused to this day why they're rated so highly. Enjoyable? Yes. Best video game ever? Nope, not even close. Will I buy 3? In a few weeks or so, definitely.

Gears, on the other hand, is an overrated 1 level tech demo as far as I'm concerned. Yes, it does look very nice in places, but the tricks they had to pull off to achieve it weren't worth it. Two enemies on screen at the same time coupled with invisible walls stopping you from going even slightly off track do not a good game make. And once you leave the first level, it's just a mess of broken level design. I can only assume the multiplayer was good enough to deserve the plaudits, because the single player was barely worth the tenner I paid for it.

Yeah, I was pretty much the same with Gears. It certainly wasn't a terrible game, but if you'd taken away those oh-so-shiny graphics you'd have been left with a game that would've scored middling sixes and sevens, not the rave reviews it managed to earn.

Oh, the screenshots never fooled me, apart from on one or two occasions on budget games where the screens were obviously from C64 but weren't from the version of the game on the tape I bought.

But meh. The 'cheeky format charade' was just bloody annoying.

Oh, and Dizzy was always shit.

In the 8 bit days, it was pretty much everything :) I didn't have any mates with spectrums (they were brand spanking new and the only other person with a computer I knew had a BBC).

Those were the days, reviews based on press releases/box art, often 6 months before a game actually came out.

Dead Rising for me. A few good friends had been raving about it, as a few people on here if i remember right. I never got on with it, and have yet to complete a single 72 hour run through. Not marketing hype though so does it count ?

I must admit Halo3 was a purchase in anticipation of multi-player and co-op rather than single player. This week's reviews have been good news...

Up till now i had never played any of the Halo series, but i recently ended up with copies of 1 and 2. So I decided to give them a run as the new one was coming out.

That decision was based purely on all the hype that surrounds the games.

based on what i've played of Halo so far i'll deifnately be picking up Halo 3 when i'm done with the first two.

I bought an entire console on hype! :)

But yes, I do this. And it soon dissipates if I do manage to resist a purchase.

It's true though. I mean, an egg with feet? That's just ridiculous.

I bought a Wii on the hype. Luckily I sold it a month later and effectively got paid to trial the system for a month.

Don't know why, but it just didn't really do anything for me.
