The reason for the brief thread title is that I still need to play the first game, and was wondering how long(ish) it is?

And then I saw (or, rather, I didn't see. If it's there, please correct me) we don't really have a thread for the Orange Box in general, so this could be adapted for those purposes.

Just ordered the Orange Box - on 360. Laugh all you like but the chances of me running most things on my haggard old PC are nil, and I'm getting lazy in my old age so extended periods of gaming while lounging in my lay-z-boy = WIN while extended periods hunched over the keyboard on my PC = LOSE.

Half Life (the first game) should be do-able in around the 2 hour mark if you want to see everything, but there are apparently youtube vids of people completing it in 30 mins.

I remember the first game taking me ages. It gets a bit silly towards the end and you die a lot.

EDIT - Peej; 2 hours ?!?!

Yup - 2 hours on a speed run.

That's just running through like a maniac though. I've never done it in anything under 20 hours meself but then I'm shite at games

Yeah I think you could probably whizz through HL these days. Some of the things that were new and too k a while to grasp are old hat these days.

And seriously, if you do want to get it over and done with, you might aswell stop when you get to the alien world and it all goes Super Mario World.

Best 2/3rds of a game ever, meets worst 1/3rd.

Er, yeah, I haven't played HL before, so I think speed runs are out of the question. ^_^ 20 hours seems longer than I was expecting, though.

And I'm totally with you on the 'Orange Box on 360' thing, peej.

I reckon you could do it in about 8-12 now. Although this is from memory of a 10 year old game. And theres probably about an hours worth of patches to grab :P

I really have the urge to play with some snarks and do that multiplayer map with the airstrike now.

if the original HL ever came out as an XBLA download I'd be in hog heaven. I still fancy replaying it.

Got to love old games now being portable.

I had HL for the PS2, but I'm not sure I ever finished it; I've not played any of the HL2 games so am rather looking forward to what must be the best value videogames package ever released...

And TF2 looks great fun. :)

Hmm, my genuine lack of enthusiasm for playing stuff on PC could mean I'll pop into town now and grab a copy of the PS2 version. I assume there's nothing 'missing' from it, as such?

edit: glol, weird.

Yeah, its missing the part about being a good game.

See the thread over on EG and just pick up the PC version. If you can read this text, you can run Halflife 1.

Anywho, I do already own the PC version so I might as well see how I get on with that.

I remember at the time the PS2 version getting a slating for terrible textures. There was a Dreamcast version which never saw the light of day, is supposed to look nice, and can be 'obtained', apparently.

If you've got it on PC, just get in and play it.
It did take me 20 hours back then. Not sure why people assume you'd now do it in 12.

Saviour and enjoy it. Try to cast your mind back to 10 years ago. FPS games dropped you into a level, you reached the end of the level and then they dropped you into the next level.
They had crap AI, etc, etc.

Half Life offered a persistent world. You start as just some low level schmo going to work at Black Mesa. And from the moment you board the monorail which takes you into the complex until you complete the game x hours later on, you will never see anything beyond a brief "loading" that pulls you out of the game world.
The sounds on the weapons are also superb by the way.

Just step in and enjoy it for what it is. A well crafted game, even if it looks dated now.

(does anyone know the latest with that Black Mesa: Source project? That's be even better of course).

+1

No. 1 game of all time according to AATG too, don't forget! I would love to replay it but it didn't work on XP the last time I tried.

I think because we're more versed in the gameplay conventions/mechanics now. Plus, what was cutting edge AI at the time (and I'm sure will still stand up today) wont give as many problems as they once did.

I think you'd be better off just watching the cut scenes on youtube or something. Half Life took me quite a while to work thru, but I am the type who gets stuck in FPS games pretty easily.

Its a pretty long game, atleast 12-15 hours i'd say minimum for a first play through. As I said in the EG thread, definatley dont play the ps2 version though. Its oogly as sin, the controls are uber shonky (it even has an odd zelda style lock on) And lots of loading if I remember correctly.

If you want to play it now rather than wait, definatley get HL Source / Generations.

If you dont mind waiting a while however, then hold on for the rather amazing looking total remake, Black Mesa Source.

Yeah, I definitely want to play it before I get the Orange Box, but I might be coming around to the 'watch the cutscenes' way of thinking if I really have to play it on PC to get a worth while experience.

I didn't really like Half Life 2, or Half Life 1 all that much either come to think of it. Tried to play through the xbox version of 2 with a friend, and we both got serious apathy attack near the end I can see they are great games, but they're just not my cup of tea.

This leaves me with a dilemma, as I really want to play Portal, and Team Fortress looks ace.

If I didn't want to play the main Half Life games as well then I'd definitely be waiting for it to hit budget prices, or just for them to release Portal separately (are they actually ever going to do that?).

I dont think there are any cutscenes in HL1 really, which is partly what made it so great and (at the time) revolutionary...the story all unfolded around you, but there were things going on you didnt know about.

At least thats how I remember it.

Look for the link TwistdChimp (I think) gave in the EG thread. Would compliment the inevitable Wiki article quite well.

I think it was #1 on the AATG poll too.

I'm sure it wouldn't have been too much trouble to pop the original+expansions into the orange box somewhere. DLC would be fine though.

I'll probably never upgrade my PC now, so it'll be on 360 for me too - when I'm less confoosed by trying to work out the best time to buy. And the best model..
