Is it just me or is it actually quite difficult to even tell the difference in game?

My mate just bought a 52" Aquos and upgrade to a 360 Elite, and to be honest, I can't tell the difference between CoD4 in 1080p on his and 720p on my 32".

Am I alone?

That's because there *is* no difference. COD4 is a 720P game. It can upscale all it likes but you'll never seen more deatil than was present at 720P.

Play an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray at the different settings and you'll see a difference though. The 1080P demo reels they show in the likes of Comet or Currys show off 1080P very nicely indeed.

So even though it says 1080p on the back of the box it's still only 720p?

Yep. That 1080P badge is being bandied around on far too many games, PS3 and 360 alike.

Edit: in fact, searching for "1080p cod4" in Google brings up tons of threads about the fibbing aspect of the developer here. It's an upscaled 720P game (and there's even some debate about that - some reckon it's running at 1024x600, a lá Halo 3 and PGR3)

So are there any 'true' 1080p 360 games then?

To be fair you're talking about two completely different sized screens - the pixel density on his isn't likely to be much better than it is on yours because his set is so much larger.

But yeah, Rhythm's point about CoD4's native res is the main reason for it.

Yeah, I seem to remember that claimed the famed 1080P badge but I never looked into whether it was true 1080p or just got noticed because it was the first one.

The HD setting of XBLA Missile Command runs at 1080P.

Just a pity it's complete shit.

As for either of the two consoles supporting 1080P games natively, well it's not going to happen too often as the RAM requirements shoot up, PCs require a fair amount of graphics card memory to do anything playable at anything at the similar res (but 16:10 ratio) of 1920x1200.

Yeah, I mentioned it because it seemed to be the first one and I wondered if they'd started 'lying' right off the bat or tried to set us up with some small truths first. ^_^ Plus, I'd think it would have been easier to do it with VT3 over something like CoD4.

Yep VT3 is 1080p.

Using my 24" Dell, and sitting at my desk, there is a big difference.

Here's a list with some of the 1080p native games - it also includes the actual res's of some games that are supposedly 720p but not too.

NBA Street: 1920×1080 AA 4x (30-60fps)
Tony Hawk Project 8: 1040×585 AA
Virtua Tennis 3: 1920×1080 AA 2x
Perfect Dark Zero: 1138×640p
Halo 3: 1152×640p
Call of Duty 3: 1120×630p
Project Gotham Racing 3: 1024×600
Tomb Raider: 1024×600
Ridge Racer 7:1920×1080 (no AA)
RR6 X360 is 1440×810 (good for fill the EDRAM without AA)

Am I being a bit daft here, or should I expect a smoother picture through 720p over VGA (with VGA being a bit sharper)?

No, really, honestly - don't worry about hurting my feelings with this one. Go ahead, let rip.

Nah, no reason for any difference other than the way your telly decodes images. Some prefer HDMI, some prefer component, some prefer VGA

Thanks Rhy, but shit if that isn't EXACTLY the answer I didn't want.

/will probably spend several weeks switching cables and checking individual games for differences, dammit

It'd be great if there was a singular "HDMI>VGA>Component>RGB" solution, but there isn't.

I hate 1080p. I took a look at the demo videos playing on some of the TVs in Selfridges yesterday and decided I need a new TV.

Chance of replacing a perfectly good SD Plasma? Nil.

Just make sure the remote is in the box when you do buy a new telly...

Yeah, it's really nice when you see it close up with the right source material. Myself, I'm happy with 720p - it works *very* well for me at 92" - but I'm being careful not to buy a 1080p TV set as if I see them next to each other I'll be wanting to upgrade my projector ASAP ;-)

That said, it's nice to buy HD material now knowing it's actually going to last me another generation of TV/projector upgrade

This is absolutely the attitude I've been taking to 1080p so far. I've been through two stages of increased clarity in my gaming and movie watching in the last 18 months - first moving to 720p, then finally getting a pair of glasses! - and enjoyed the benefit of both, it's nice to know that there's another level to jump up.
