Ok, i asked this question on EG a while back but didn't get any decent answers just random shite so in search of genuine help i'm asking you guys to advise on which console to get, PS3 or 360 baring in mind my needs:

Last gen I had a cube and ps2, have to say the ps2 got more use and is still in use though I did love some of my cube games. Anyway my main reason for wanting a new console is for shiny new fifa and the less shiny PES 08, however naturally i'm going to want other games to complement these two, I have no specific genres, i'll give anything a go. Also I have no HDTV(i'm a student)so anything relating to HDTV is largely irrelevent to me for the moment.

Anyway sorry for the noobishness of this thread but I can't decide which one to get and would appreciate any help. Thanks.

In much the same way the PS2 was the last gen console to get due to the wide variety of titles a lot of which are dirt cheap, the fact it's the lead platform on most multiformat titles and they're cheap as chips (relatively) I'd suggest a 360.

PS3 still doesn't have enough software for me at the moment really and while it has dropped in price it's still more expensive than a premium with a few games thrown in as well. Perhaps in six months things will make it more attractive but it still needs more worthwhile games.

Of course what you should do really is get a decent PC because they're fucking great. ;-)

Honestly don't worry about who made the console just get the one that has more games you like. Though most games will be multiplatform anyways.

I chose the PS3 because of above mentioned reason and it was more reliable then the 360 when I bought it. I don't if that's still the case with the 360 getting new chips and what not.

360 has generally had better press. The only thing wrong is that with the PS3 its all about High Def really and blu ray which will burn a hole in your pocket. And also only the 60GB PS3 have backwards compatability but are now not being manufactured anymore. But generally it is up to the games that are on the consoles and what you would wish to purchase. But i would recommend 360.

Yeah i think you're probably right Whizzo, i'll have to go find a good bundle now. As i was saying d0ugi3, HD etc is not important for me as I'm living away from home with a SDTV and i'm not likely to be able to buy a HDTV for quite a while, also i'm not all that interested in HD, yet anyway.

And hey if I had the money I'd buy a beast of a pc but alas..

I don't thing price disparity is that big, if you add up all the things you have to pay for extra, when buying a 360. Ofcourse it always depends on what you need. When I was pondering that question a couple of month ago, the PS3 actually came out as the cheaper option for me. I guess that still holds true given that you might find some PS3s bundeled with two games.

But as said before it really depends on the games you want to play.

Then i would say 360 is for you. Better ames and most of your gaming mates have one a 360 aswell so there would be more reason to buy it.

Another vote for the 360 here. It has the better exclusives of the two consoles and as Whizzo said, multi platform games are at the moment always better on the 360.

Plus, the joypads are far superior and you'd get to play on Live with us all.

I'd go for a 360 with an RGB scart, you should be able to get a really good package deal which includes a footy game too.

If you just want access to an array of top class games, some of which are now damn cheap, then you go 360. If you're also interested in the machines from other points of view, i.e. as potential media centers and ways of watching HD movies, I'd give the PS3 more consideration.

The PS3 has one or two exclusives now, with Ratchet and Drake's Fortune for instance, but really compared with the 360's range and also the advantages it has wrt multiformat titles, you'd have to have some very specific reason to buy a PS3 instead at the moment.

Having made the same recommendation not 5 minutes ago to a mate of my missus's that's round at the moment, I'd say 360. If you're feeling a bit flush and you have access to a PC monitor, get a 360, and VGA cable and at least that way you'll get SOME of the thrills of an expensive HD setup for relatively cheapo prices.

(what are widescreen monitors going for nowadays? Can't be massive amounts surely?)

Note: I agree that the 360 is probably the better console out of the two to get at the moment, especially if you can't afford or don't want both. My previous comment was just picking up on HA's use of the word "better". The PS3 has a different selection of exclusives that cater to more varied tastes, instead of the 360's primary focus on a core 18-30 male market.

We may be a dying breed, but it's still possible for some people to prefer games that don't contain generic space marines and fast cars, you know ;-)

19" widescreen monitors around 120 notes, 22" about 50 quid more, obviously shopping around there's cheap WS bargains about and don't forget you need speakers, even if a monitor has them built in they will be shiter than shite, guaranteed!

PS3s can't be connected to a VGA monitor unless it has a full DVI connector with HDCP, some do, some don't.

Looking at the 6 PS3 titles I own, I'd have to say that at the moment the 360 has a wider variety of different games. Sure, it's got more than its fair share of driving / shooting games but then the PS3's got a pretty good to mediocre collection of those too.

Summing up my 360 collection, my argument may not seem like it's borne out but if I do a quick summary:

13 games in my collection are driving games of some description

10 are out and out shooters

7 are sports / extreme sports games

8 are adventure games

1 is er, a bit of a genre buster (but we'll call it a god game)

So it's all down to your own personal taste and what you choose to play. Admittedly, if you're after quirky weird shit, you're probably better off looking either to the PS3 or the Wii

Easiest, decision, ever. Get the 360 if you like playing games. Get the PS3 if you like going "ooh, it's shiny, now what?"
