Here's the thing. Most people who've played Kane and Lynch will tell you that most of the negative opinions kicking around about the game are from people who haven't even seen hide nor hair of it.

And yep, I'll hold my hand up and say that I read a lot of the reviews, saw the footage and made up my mind that it was going to be rubbish.

BUT thankfully PS3 owners (odd that only PS3 owners have this luxury at the mo and not 360 owners) can play the PSN demo and make up their minds themselves.

Kane and Lynch is actually not as bad as it's being made out to be. It's clunky at times, it looks pretty much on a par with the last IO game on next gen stuff (Hitman Blood Money) but it really doesn't come off too badly when compared with other gun-and-cover games of the past few months.

No we haven't been bought, trust me on that. It really is a case of context here. The thing is, Kane and Lynch has been released at one of the WORST times of the year for a game of its ilk, going up against several other classier shooters, and released during the yuletide run up when people really aren't interested in much else other than Need for Speed.

My advice - play the demo and make up your own mind. Those of you who rather liked Freedom Fighters might feel like you're on familiar ground as a lot of the squad dynamics work in a similar way. And those of you who like the Hitman puzzley-style stealth might like it too.

The demo covers the "rappel" level you've probably seen in footage, and as Whizzo's said elsewhere, it's so bloody film-like and so vertigo-inducing that it's worth grabbing the demo just to see it for yourself.

Well I think it's jolly good stuff as I've said in another thread, pity about GFWL on the PC version though as that's an arse!

I've all but given up on what other people think and/or reviews these days. Just had too much drek recommended to me in the past. These days, if it looks like a game I'll enjoy, I'll grab it and play it.

This is still on my Xmas list. Can't see how I won't enjoy it.

I'll probably rent this in the new year when I've got through:

GH3, Stranglehold, Orange Box, CoD4, Assassin's Creed, PGR4, FIFA........

Actually I can see me playing CoD4 multiplayer indefinitely.

It's definitely a title to play before buying. As I said, it's clunky but once you get used to the control method, it sort of makes sense.

It's not as ugly as it's been made out to be. It doesn't look anything like the target renders we all saw back at E3 last year but it's not hideous.

What K&L looks like on my PC (50meg Xvid). Actually it looks better than that as the res is doubled and it's not compressed of course! I was just arsing about in FRAPS to see how much it affected the framerate, this wasn't the first time I'd done this section.

I watched that vid at home alongside the PS3 version - and the texturing is bang on. It's nowhere near as smooth as that though.

Real stomach-lurching moment when you pan the camera around as you start to Rappel though :)

The height was so nice I had to show it off, the keen eyed will have noticed that it is set in Japan from the side of the road the traffic drives on. :-)

I thought the PS3 demo was quite good. Was annoyed when it stopped because I wanted to play on.

It was impressive! I suffer from chronic "in-building" vertigo (in other words, I can climb up the highest peak in the Dolomites and stand on the very edge of it but get me in a building and I brick it) and this bit in the game really brought it on big time to the point where I couldn't pan the camera downwards :(

I disliked the demo initially, but as soon as I was out of the first office I found it got pretty gritty, and really did feel like you were dodging bullets. Not sure about the adrenaline reviving mechanic though. I can see myself picking this up at some point, I preferred it to Stranglehold, tbh. Can't see me purchasing it at full price though.

Now I think of it, it reminds me of The Getaway, which also got unfairly slated by a lot of people.

I rather enjoyed it a lot. It's certainly extremely clunky and there's more than one "What the fuck?" moment but it has quite a few of its own innovation (primarily the environments) and the running battles with the police are precisely the sort of cops 'n robbers gameplay I've been wanting to play. The visuals take a while to click - the game's at its best when looking brash and overstylised and at its worst when trying to be more down to earth or realistic. The final settings look pretty bland and uninteresting compared to the cityscapes.

I can imagine lots of folks hating it though and can see why - it's not something everyone will enjoy. What surprised me most is that the more obvious flaws didn't annoy me more since there's plenty here that would usually warrant me screaming obsceneties at my PC. Not sure why the team AI actually seems to be worse than Freedom Fighters though, given the amount of time in between.

This might sound daft for a squad based game but I'd have actually just liked to have the game let you worry about K & L rather than anyone else. At times, the squad manipulation stuff just got in the way of the gameplay. I guess without it, it would've just been a straight-line shooter but even so.

I think that's actually a very good idea. A more refined AI centered around just one sidekick, with the others just assisting him, would probably be the best wasy to go. It's not Rainbow 6 in terms of tactical planning, after all. In the end I mostly opted to move them as a group anyway and acted as a flanker myself, since they often got confused as to which side of the wall was safest.

I did wonder if there was any point to the larger squads that I was missing, since every random soldier that joined in the bigger attacks inevitably got himself cut down in the first six or seven seconds.

You know, the more I see of this, the more I can't wait to play it.

But then I like Two Worlds, so I'm clearly barking.

You basts. You've pretty much sold me on the game now even though I wasnt interested in it. Like AssCree. And Mass Effect. That said, if it wasnt £22 in Gamestation this week I'd probably not bother.

If by "the same" you mean " as clunky as" then yes, they are. The squad controls are a tiny teensy bit like Freedom Fighters but not as nice. The game just feels a bit stop and start. I kept thinking that it would've actually made a very good strategic title a la Full Spectrum Warrior because turn based it would've worked a lot better.

It so is, it's horrible....!

It can't seem to make its mind up whether to be context or action based. Meaning that you want to garotte someone, you walk up to within a hair's breadth of them, hit the button and by the time Agent 47's pulled his finger out of his baldy old arse, the person you want to garotte has either seen you or moved on.

Prime example - the very first "puzzle", you have to distract two guys standing outside a hut thingy by chucking a coin. No fucking amount of ANYTHING would allow me to chuck the coin out of the window, or once I'd opened the door, far enough away to distract them. In my frustration I just thought "Fuck this", walked out and beat the two of 'em to death.

Every single puzzle in the game for me as far as I've got (the Wine Tasting bit, I lost the will to live after failing that for the 4th time) has been as clunky and unintuitive as fuck.

Definitely a game obviously wasted on me :)
