I'm looking for game to play around christmas and thought Ico might be a good choice, but the problem is my PS2 broke 2 or 3 years ago, so I can only play it on the PS3.
The question is: Does it run on the PS3?

It feels very low-res (224 lines) but the NTSC version works on my (full backwards-compatibility) US PS3.

Might be a daft question but if I was to get a PS3 in the near future which version should I get if I can't get the 60G version and want PS2 compatibility?

They had an advert on today for Currys which claimed the PS3 they were selling for 349 could play PS2 games, so that must have been the 60Gb one. As far as I know the 299 40Gb one doesn't do that.

Yeah noticed the thread on EG that PC World had more in stock too. But I'm talking about 6-8 months down the line. Does seem odd though that places are suddenly getting more stock of the 60G back in...

Maybe they've realised there's room for a two-tiered market like MS did.

The 40GB doesn't have backwards compatability so don't buy that one!

60gb is the way to go but don't expect blanket compatibility with all PS2 titles. Better off if you've got a spare SCART slot on the back of your telly picking up a cheapo PS2.

I suppose the more cynical view is that they always were going to keep the 60Gb one with backwards compatibility, but managed to sell a shedload of them by letting people think that once they were gone, that was it.

But none of the console manufacturers would do that, would they ?

Speaking of badly written, EG's Ico/SotC-HD review is painfully amateur.

I'm not even going to look. I've preordered it and I don't want some specky little upstart on EG trying to sully the waters.

I do too, I'm desperately hoping that they affect me in the same way they did the last time I played 'em both (sadly because my PS2 was such a bastard to get working with SOTC, I only got the chance for one run through the whole thing).

Any news on whether Ico features that bastard piston puzzle?

It's based on the Euro release so I imagine it does. I kinda hope it stays if only for completeness.

Speaking of things they haven't changed: Ico's controls. Just about tolerable when it came out, and badly aged by now. So that's something to endure.

Never got the grief over the piston... unless I'm thinking of the wrong bit. Just a case of pressing jump at the right time, no? Don't remember getting stuck at all.

I had trouble with this part of the game on each playthrough, and I'm seemingly not alone in that regard :) It's a combination of Ico's jumping being horribly floaty and incorrect timing (it's just not intuitive) :D

S'right. I think if you had previously heard about the piston problems, you'd automatically know to compensate for the stupid timing and you'd probably nail that piston puzzle first go (I've never had a problem with it on subsequent plays through). Encountering it 'fresh' without foreknowledge, that was the bit of the game that had me sticking Ico back on the shelf for months till I heard that it was more or less a question of mistiming your timing (if that makes sense) rather than doing what you thought was logical.

Once you get through that bit, the rest of the game is an utter joy in comparison.

Not to dwell on it too much, but the other problem is that there is literally nothing like that puzzle for the entirety of the game up to that point. No crazy jumping puzzles where you get launched ridiculously high into the air - it seems so cartoony and out of place. Which led to me, after many failures, to assume that that wasn't the solution after all.

Yup I know what you mean. Most of the other tricky puzzles are tricky merely because you're expected to push your character to the limits, dealing with the camera angles you're given. The piston puzzle seems completely out of context. Probably why it was removed for most other versions of the game.

Gawd, I really hope this turns up this morning. It's an odd one because Amazon order status said "posted" but didn't bother sending out an email to say so. Very unusual for them.

I didn't get an email either.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the piston puzzle was added to the Euro version, not removed from the others. Something about some notion that Europeans liked their games more platformy, so they chucked that in.

It was added? That's even more bizarre and a bit insulting.

Still, at least we didn't get the US Box art :)
