Well folks - to start on a downer, my father-in-law, who was taken ill on Boxing Day and has deteriorated rapidly since, was given 'hours' last night by the hospital. The family spent the day with him saying our goodbyes. He didn't want us there at the end, and said what he needed to say to us today, so we're fully expecting the call from the hospital later.

Despite all this, I think it's probably a blessing, as his quality of life has been going downhill for some time with emphesema. He said today he knows what's happening, he's ready, and he's happy about it.

Anyway, I didn't actually mean this thread title to be sarcastic, so I'd like to wish you all a Happy New Year, and hope you and your families stay well in 2008.

Sorry to hear that, JimJam, there's never a good time but it does seem even more poignant losing people at this time of year.

Good luck to everybody in 2008, I hope you all have the best year possible.

You and your family are in my prayers mate. It really is sad to hear things like that, especially at this time of year.

Happy New Year, everyone.

Sorry to hear about your family troubles mate.

I am in a slightly opposite position, knowing that my mother is coming out of hospital after being in there since the 23rd.

My condolences, it can't be an easy time for you.

all the best wishes for the new year

Thanks all,

Just to let you know, father-in-law died this morning at about 6am, very peacefully. He really had decided this was his time to go, and we all got to say goodbye properly yesterday.

Anyway, Happy New Year all, and all the best for 08.

:(

Sorry to hear that mate, I really am.

Best wishes to you and your family... I'm in a similar situation with an uncle on my wife's side and we're all surprised he's lasted this long, but it's just a matter of days now. It's horrible.

The bittersweet year continues apace. My wife and daughter escaped completely unharmed from our newly written-off car yesterday ! Not bothered about the car (it was going to be replaced this year anyway) but obviously extremely relieved that they're both OK.

Unlucky in regards to your car, but it's good to hear that no-one was hurt.

Fuck .. that sounds like a proper accident. I'm glad to hear they're unhurt. I hope they're not too shook up over it. :-/

Very relieved. There was no-one else involved either luckily. The wife was joining a bypass not far from us, and that particular sliproad is aptly named ! It's at the bottom of a hill so is often wet, and also has a very sharp turn in it where there often seems to be spilt diesel. The missus hit a diesel patch as she took the corner (at about 35-40mph) and just went straight on into a crash barrier. My daughter was asleep in the back until impact and took great delight in telling the policemen and ambulancemen that she'd had a big car crash ! Very grateful that they're both OK, but I wish she'd crashed it the week BEFORE we spent £500 on a service !
