I'm in a bit of a fix at the moment.

Currently travelling for my company and like the arse that I am I left my AC adapter for my laptop at home.

Fine, bought one here. Plugged it in, now Vista tells me that the smart ac adapter is not powerful enough. It's a ANTEC 100w laptop adapter. The one HP supplied with my 8510p is rated at 90w.

Can anyone explain this to me? The shop won't take the adapter back either, so currently I'm looking at getting crap from my boss when I can't zork anymore due to no power and owner of a 70 adapter I can't use.

edit: oh ffs I forgot to put the thread title in, I hate this week.

Wattage is the 'frequency', what you need to worry about is Ampage.

Sigh, I wish I'd known.

Oh and thanks to whomever changed the thread title.

I was wondering if there was anyway of reducing the power usage of the laptop low enough to make the output sufficient. Currently the laptop uses most of its resources once it's connected to a socket. Would lowering that have an effect? I have around 20 mins of bat life left in which to experiment. great.

Ummm.... turn the backlight low, take out anything like the optical drive (if you can)?

I had a similar thing happent o me when I picked up my first laptop, a P150 from eBay. Very nice machine in a lot of ways (had obviously been expensive in its day) but the seller gave me the wrong PSU for it which was shy at least two or three amps, was fine until I plugged in the modular CD drive and about five minutes after that the PSU blew. :/

What's the difference between your lappy's amp requirement and your new PSU's output?

Presuming you're able to answer, that is....!

Well, nope, ran out of juice by that point.

I have my regular PSU back again which is nice. I'll try and fiddle with the settings when I have time, since it would be nice to think I hadnt completely wasted my money.

Ah well, cheers for all the advice anyway. I had a nightmare travelling this week, already spent 3 hours on a train today and have another 6-7 hours to go. Woohoo.

You have an HP computer. HP computers only accept power from proprietary HP chargers. Sorry. Whoever sold you the Antec does not know their job.

Yay for idiots in that case. Though the Antec does list several HP's in its list of compatible laptops.

I'll have a look at getting a HP one, I really could use the second adapter to reduce travel weight between home and the office.

Well, back from Cornwall with a fever, being in the office is not really helping. sigh
