I'm really tempted, i usually hate this type of game, you know with 'proper cars', and most people here know how i drive in games, but i have played the demo loads of times now, the graphics are some of the best i have seen, and it makes proper driving seem fun.

So what's the verdict?

Reckon I'd continue having fun if i bought it? what's the online like?
Who else is taking the plunge?

Whizzo, your thoughts please?

It's awesome.

It's an arcade racer with a ton of things to do, got my first Pro licence last night (you rank up in each of the three regions separately) and I've now got a team mate driving for me so there's much more cash earning potential and also the weird situation of letting an AI "buddy" get passed you because you're holding them up in a race type that's their speciality...

If you enjoyed the demo, you'll love the game.

Is there a demo on XBL? I had a browse last night but could only spot video clips.

I must be going blind.

I would say buy it Chris.

Even though it may look like a sim it's an arcade racer through and through. The emphasis here is on having fun. Which is not trying to be disparaging to Grid, but this design has upset a lot of people who were expecting a next gen Toca.

As you mentioned the graphics are absolutely fantastic. The career mode is well structured. There is plenty of variety to the racing, but it is not as long winded as Forza or GT. It definitely doesn't feel like you are grinding through the same tracks over and over again.

My only complaint would be that there is no fuel usage and tyre wear in the Le Mans 24 Hour races. I know they didn't want pit stops in the game, but I think it would have made sense to make an exception for Le Mans. Any one remember how good Le Mans on the Dreamcast was? It would have been great to replicate part of that game in Grid.

Yeah the Le Mans racing without pits does seem a bit daft, especially if you're insane enough you can set it to 24 hours of real time if you do it outside the GRID World career!

Only nutters need to apply for that one I think as you can't save it at any point.

Ah, damn, I was planning to attempt that at some stage, but no saves obviously makes it a bit of a no-no.

My PC's packed up at the moment, but I'll be getting this as soon as I get the chance to play it. I did find the handling in the demo a bit dodgy at first, but it wasn't too bad once I got used to it. Sure, it may not be entirely realistic, but that's not what I want from a racing game anyway - in terms of looks, sense of speed and sheer fun, this seems to tick all the right boxes. Not to mention flashback, which is a superb feature for an arcade racer imo.

The deal breaker for me is the fact that it seems to have an interesting career mode, with plenty of variety in tracks and cars. I tend to get bored with the SP modes in most racing games.

If you're really dedicated you could pause it and leave it running overnight or something, I guess. But yes, a bit of insanity would be a prerequisite for something like this.

Another insane thing to with GRID is try and get the achievement for the only car still running at the end of a destruction derby.

Completely unrelated but 50 laps of DD action will take about 25 minutes or so...

/strokes "Last Man Standing" and "Keep Rolling" achievements

50 laps of destruction derby is fun, especially if you start at the back of the grid and end up having to chase down the leader who has a 25 second lead on you if you crash!

Knocking down the lead steadily and then killing his car is excellent and you really learn how to drive one of the cars when it's had a few knocks.

Damn sight more entertaining than screwing up one corner at Le Mans and never being able to catch up again.

I think we should both buy it.

Then i can use the excuse 'but Retroid's got it', which does seem to take the edge off the barbs, strangely.

Well I know someone who has ordered it (won't spoil who it is :-)) and it'll be arriving soon given their normal speedy service.

Oooh 1 recommendation credit. :-)

Where's your rolling one then eh? ;-)

During normal DDs I just stick to winning the race, which I've not failed at, when you've got a sponsor who'll pay 15K for a win and it's in your major sponsor position, so it doubles up, there's quite an incentive!

Sure is! I'm playing it around a mate's house and we've had a couple of discussions about whether a higher bonus for finishing 3rd is better to go for than a lower bonus for 5th place. Serious stuff. :)

To get the DD achievement we did muller all the opposition but you can sit at a sweet spot on the short detroit course. You're in an A.I. blindspot and they hurtle over the jump straight into you. Pile Up! :D

Sponsorship does take some thought, once you've got a team mate you both can't come first so unless it's worth a lot of money there's little point in using a 1st place only bonus as one of you will has to miss out.

But when you get a 15K offer I couldn't refuse that! :-)

Best bit: gunning for second just a second or so behind the lead car in the race only for his tire to pop! :o

I was doing an open wheel race at Nurburgring and coming down the start finish straight and had seen evidence of someone colliding with a wall, in the distance I see a car flip over, another car braking really hard to avoid colliding, only for me to be going far too fast so ploughed straight into the braking car!

Right Flashback time, I decide to go right of the car so I'll be safe, this time around though things don't go the same, the car *doesn't flip* so I plough into it instead!

Flashback again and this time slow right the fuck down and just drive around him not flipping this time! I'd used all my Flashbacks on one incident (playing on Serious) but it was fantastic.

So be careful with the Flashbacks, the future is not set, there is no fate but what we make for ourselves... :-)
