Right, long story short I think something is deleting parts of my music library. Songs I am positive I had on this machine are no longer there. I use itunes mostly for listening to my collection.

I keep on stumbling upon tracks that it can no longer find. I've done independent searches without any luck too. Am I going mad and there is no way that is happening, or is there something wrong my laptop?

On a side note, I updated Firefox today and then realised it had deleted all my add-ons the bast. I'm used to some of them being flagged as incompatible, but in this case they had all just disappeared. Weird.

Pretty sure I'm not. I think my missus would have told me by now.

It's been going on for a while. At first I thought it was only stuff that I hadn't transferred correctly from my old laptop, but too much new stuff has also gone missing for that to be the only explanation. A lot of the tracks gone have pretty high play counts, and the itunes install was fresh on this laptop.

Edit: sigh, I probably sound like a bit of an idiot, but I really can't explain it at the moment.

Possibly, though that would be a pretty extreme rollback. Another fun thing my laptop has developed is installing and then uninstalling Vista SP1. It get's to 99% and then finds an error and reverts everything.

I think a general re-install is in order. I'm just a bit lazy.

I was half thinking the issue might be some overzealous copyright protection but then they've removed the wrong things. Besides, I doubt that would be possible and the legal ramifications comical. Nah, me being paranoid.

You haven't run the 'library' thing on media player have you ? Some songs in my collection ended up as 'unknown', or were completely wrongly id'd and found later when I'd gone through my whole collection and found a few artists I'd never heard of.

That could be I suppose. It's done it in a very random fashion though. Would that also change file names? I've been doing file searches for the missing mp3's and not finding anything.

Is iTunes set up to delete tracks off the drive if you delete them from the library or tracklist?
I've almost fallen foul of this a few times with media file manager type applications.

That was my initial suspicion. They wouldn't still be in the main itunes library then though would they? Which the missing files are.

Apologies for covering the obvious, but do you use an Audio folder on a secondary drive or partition as your default audio folder?

I think iTunes puts stuff by default in >my documents>my music>iTunes or somewhere like that.

May explain why iTunes seems to know where these files are, but a manual search of your normal Audio folder doesn't find them.

It would have been a good possibility but I've already checked the iTunes folder as well as done searches including all hidden folders/drives.

I'll have to do a complete revamp of my system anyway sometime soon, I'll try and recover most of my stuff from old backups hopefully.

Cheers for the suggestions though guys.
