So what do we do right? What do we do wrong? Here's a chance to feed us some suggestions as to what you'd like to see on AATG (aside from More Stevas, more Swearing and more boobs).

Can I kick off? Mod-only threads for internal staff stuff like "who's reviewing what next" and "which beard style suits us better? Full on birds-nest or poncy goatee and sideburns?"

Considering its open to anyone to review, that doesn't make a great deal of sense?

I was thinking of building in a system whereby anyone and I mean absolutely anyone can submit an article to the front page but much like we prefer/shun in the forum you can rate authors. And then over time people can build up a reputation for being a good (or bad writer).

The idea is ultimately then that you can filter out only the best 4 or 5 out of 5 level authors. Dunno if that'd work but it could be another way to draw people into the site. I also wondered if it'd tempt some of the people from EG that write reader reviews. If there's one thing lacking from EG it's that there's no positive/negative feedback other than from the comments.

That's actually quite a cool idea...!

It'd also give "staff" writers some feedback. One of the biggest frustrations about GU (one of the many) and one of the biggest frustrations about writing for Totally is no fucker ever gives you feedback. Getting more or less instant feedback would be ace.

Stick a visible hit-count on the articles too - something like "X people have read / viewed this article" would also give any devs / publishers that feed us review copies an instant idea of how much interest a particular game review is getting

Pummel Metacritic for membership, and include digg links also please, please, pretty please with sugar on the top.

That's a good idea Hairy, but I'd split your frontpage and have the "Anyone can submit" stuff on one side, and the "Approved by AATG editor(s)" stuff on t'other, so that you're not swapped with 50 reviews of the latest Halol/GTA/MGS4.

The site requires a huge logo that covers up about a third of the front page and serves absolutely no purpose what-so-ever other than pissing off potential readers.

It has to be done in Flash too.

Or huge banner ads placed across the top and then the right-hand side of the page. Coded in Flash in such a way that brings a dual-core 2 to its knees.

And reviews spread across a minimum of 4 pages, with a score at the end that bears no relation to the text of the review and serves no purpose other than to create metacritic-induce controversy

I'd have to question that last bit as content manager! But the rest I can relate to.

The idea of letting anyone submit an artcile is definitely a unique one. It could either prove a key niche or a painITA. Certainly worth a shot though!

User-subbed news would go a long way to keep people returning. Those with mod status will be able to approve all subbed entries which allows them on the front page. All un-approved content can be seen and commented on by all users so that the community at large can shoot down the rumours or help correct mistakes.

Achievements / trophies linked to submission, or a ranking system would also help keep people contributing.

I was wondering how we could incorporate something like DPOT into here. That would rock.

Maybe do a fake VG247 like Blog-style site offshoot.

indeed, i think a lot of people writing real news and articles might get inspired to write less-real news, ideas will come to them as they quote EA rep's saying they honestly aren't evil any more while bumming nuns in the seventh ring

we could steal the better of the DPOT news and use it to get started, ideally the one login would work for aatg and the fake-news offshoot, it'd encourage more people to lie :D

I think we need to resurrect the demon ostrich from the GU logo. We could call it "the Ghost of Gamers Universe".

Hell, it could even write for the site. I'd be game to put a diabolical deformed stork as my authorial portrait.

Hairy's rating idea sounds great - the more Achievement-ish point-scoring bollocks round here the better :D

The rating reviews idea is a good one, but would be heavily open to abuse if not thought through properly.

All the numb-nuts that get out of their tree when their favourite game isn't reviewed favourably would just give really shit ratings, thus making the system redundant (as it's meant to be based on the article/style, not just because they didn't agree with the score and because they're 12). Perhaps readers have to build up to that sort of level, i.e. only those with a 4* rating or above can submit feedback?

There's got to be a way to make it work well, as it's a good idea.

I'd say that the main content of the site should be written by AATG staff members only. If you let everyone post news and reviews then the site would just get swamped with with rubbish articles. Sure you could moderate the content, but then you'd have people whining as to why their article was removed ;-)

I'm all for reader reviews though just that they should be an addition to the AATG content.

This is how I would have things -

1. Each game has it's own game page that links to any news, videos, screenshots, previews and AATG review. Nothing revolutionary there, but this seems to be the agreed standard for most gaming sites.

2. In addition this game page would allow users to submit a score for the game or a reader review; which would only be posted after the thumbs up from a mod. Obviously if someone was submitting loads of quality reviews you would get them on staff ;-)

3. Have a rankings page where games can be compared by AATG or user scores. Have top ten lists by format, by genre, by format and genre, and the AATG hot 100 games. Make it a discussion point like Metacritic rankings and the like. Have random top 5 rankings appear on the front page to keep up interest.

4. Make a big deal out of each user profile. You could do the EG thing of having games collection list and Gamertag/PSN/Wii code in one place. I was thinking of going for a Live/PSN style gamercard as well. Expand on your trophy system to encourage users to interact with the site. Give trophies for 'my first forum thread', '20 games rated', '10 games reviewed', '50 comments' and so on. Bandwidth depending each user could have their own logo too. Which would accompany their reviews and replace the flags on the forum.

5. The logo on the front page should be half the size and the news articles made more prominent. I'd go for the menu bar with 2 columns below. News on the left, features on the right. The first 5 posts in each column would have a picture then 5 to 10 posts below just text. Below the columns I would have the random top 5 games list I alluded to earlier, a top 5 ranking of users by AATG trophies won and links to any affiliates.

That's it for now. I hope some of these suggestions prove useful \o/

Yeah, I'd be weary of letting the plebs in too much too. Possibly a separate section for the poor mongrels with a best of selection on the front page, almost like a writers apprenticeship.

its far easier to complain from the side lines

I recommend a full 5-star rating to everyone who continued to post here during the lean Work-Safe years.

Oh, and a central page for all gamertags 'n' stuff, rather than having to look in peoples' profiles.
